Szlachetna gra in short

Noble Game is the story of a rich, warm-hearted girl whose life is arranged by others. Gunvor Eiden is taken to Bragehall, a decaying castle with a harsh motto and a sealed room, and is married to a count who cannot give her love. Her grandmother Margareta, driven by a fifty-year-old love, believes she is saving a name.

What Szlachetna gra is about

What would you do if your grandmother asked you to marry a stranger so that an old castle could survive? That is where Noble Game begins, on a damp October train ride in southern Sweden, with eighteen-year-old Gunvor Eiden and a seventy-year-old woman who hides a secret.

Elisabeth Kuylenstierna-Wenster, a Swedish author who died in 1933, wrote this novel about a merchant's granddaughter married into the ancient Brage family of Skåne. Gunvor has wealth, warmth and a hunger for joy. She lacks a say in her own life.

Dla kogo. You will love this book if you enjoy Scandinavian family sagas, old houses with secrets, strong-minded heroines, and romances where money, duty and passion pull apart.

A Grandmother Brings Gunvor to Bragehall

Gunvor Eiden, eighteen and orphaned, travels by train in October with her grandmother, Margareta Eiden, toward the old castle of Bragehall. The dying count wishes to see them. On the journey Gunvor learns that her grandmother hopes to make her the young count's bride.

Gunvor is the heiress of Eiden and Company, a firm founded by a peddler from Savoy who sold plaster figures. She grew up with strict governesses and a grandmother whose word is law. She longs for happiness without knowing what it looks like.

At the station she meets young Count Haqvin Brage, polite and soft, and she sees a knight. At the gate she reads the family motto, Fac et nihil spera, which means act, and hope for nothing. She shudders while Haqvin laughs lightly. Grandmother's plan is simple: Gunvor's millions will restore the estate, and Haqvin will give it an heir. A choice made out of trust can still be a choice made for someone else.
