Mrs. Warren's Profession in short

Mrs Warren's Profession follows a young woman who believes in work, facts and plain speaking, and who discovers that her comfortable education rests on a story she has never heard. Her mother tells her that story in a single night, and the telling changes how the audience judges both women. Around them, a baronet, a clergyman, a young idler and a gentle artist all live on what they refuse to name.

What Mrs. Warren's Profession is about

What do you do when you learn that the comfort of your whole life was bought with money you never asked about? That is the question Vivie Warren, a brilliant young Cambridge mathematician, faces in Mrs Warren's Profession. The play makes you stand beside her as she finds her answer.

Bernard Shaw wrote this drama in four acts, and the censor would not license it for the stage. It reached two private performances in London in January 1902. Shaw did not want the audience to blame one woman. He wanted them to look at a society that leaves poor women with bad choices and then pretends to be shocked at what they choose.

Dla kogo. You will love this if you enjoy sharp talk on the stage, family secrets, strong women who say what they think, and plays that ask what money and respectability really cost.

A modern daughter waits in a cottage garden

The play opens at a cottage in Surrey on a summer afternoon. Vivie Warren, aged twenty-two, lies in a hammock with a pile of serious books beside her. She has tied for third wrangler at Cambridge, though she calls it poorly paid work rather than a triumph.

A gentleman called Praed arrives. He is an architect who calls himself an artist and an anarchist, and he expects a delicate young lady. Vivie shakes his hand so firmly that he flexes his fingers afterward. She says she did her mathematics for money. She plans an office in the City, doing actuarial work and some legal work too. She likes a cigar, a little whisky and a detective story.

But Vivie has a gap in her knowledge. She hardly knows her mother, who has lived abroad while Vivie lived at schools. Praed grows uneasy and nearly speaks, then stops himself. She trusts facts, work and plain dealing, and she has never asked where her comfortable life came from.

Vivie believes she knows how the world works, and the play is about to show her otherwise.

Characters, plot and themes

Main characters

  • Vivie Warren A clever, practical young woman who has just excelled at Cambridge and wants to build a career in law and finance on her own terms.
  • Mrs Warren Vivie's loud, warm and shrewd mother, who wants her daughter's respect and company and is proud of the life she built from poverty.
  • Sir George Crofts A wealthy baronet and old business partner of Mrs Warren, who sees Vivie as a prize to be won and thinks well of himself.
  • Praed A gentle, romantic architect and old friend of Mrs Warren, who believes in art and beauty and wants everyone to be kind.
  • Frank Gardner A charming, idle and penniless young man who wants to marry Vivie and takes nothing seriously.
  • The Reverend Samuel Gardner Frank's father, a pompous clergyman who wants a respectable position and fears that his youthful past may catch up with him.

How it ends (spoiler)

Vivie sees Crofts's claims, and Frank's flippant lightness, for what they are, and she refuses both. She learns that her mother still runs her houses, and she cuts every tie with her. Mrs Warren pleads, bribes and rages, then leaves unreconciled. Frank steps back, and Vivie tears up his farewell note. She settles at her desk in the Chancery Lane office and loses herself in her figures, alone and content.

Pytania o Mrs. Warren's Profession

What is Mrs Warren's Profession about?

It follows Vivie Warren, a young Cambridge mathematician, as she meets her mother and discovers how the family's comfort was paid for. Shaw uses her story to question respectability, money and the choices open to poor women.

Why was Mrs Warren's Profession banned?

The Lord Chamberlain's censor refused to license it because of its subject. Shaw says it reached the stage only in January 1902, in private performances given by the Stage Society in London.

What does the title Mrs Warren's Profession mean?

It refers to the trade Mrs Warren practises and manages. Shaw argues in his preface that the real subject is the society that leaves poor women with few choices, not just one woman.

Is Mrs Warren's Profession a true story?

No, the characters are invented. Shaw built the play on real social conditions, drawing on official reports about housing and women's work, and he published it with a preface explaining his purpose.

Is Mrs Warren's Profession easy to follow?

Yes, in the sense that it is a clear four-act play with lively dialogue and stage directions. Each act has a strong scene, and the characters are sharply drawn, so the ideas come through the talk.
