Pan Opp in short

Mr. Opp follows a small man with enormous plans who comes home for a funeral and stays to care for his childlike sister. He starts a newspaper, falls in love, promotes an oil boom, and treats every setback as the start of something grander.

What Pan Opp is about

What happens to a man who lives mostly in his imagination when real life asks something of him? In Mr. Opp, a small man in a loud checked suit steps onto a waiting launch, carrying shoe samples and a head full of oil wells and business plans. He has come to bury his stepfather. He stays because of one person.

Alice Caldwell Hegan Rice wrote this gentle comic novel in the early twentieth century. At its center is D. Webster Opp, who turns every failure into the start of a grander plan. The book gives you laughter, unforgettable small-town people, and a hero whose pretending and kindness are hard to tell apart.

Dla kogo. Readers who enjoy warm small-town comedy, eccentric neighbors, river steamboats and a bighearted underdog will love this book. It rewards anyone who likes humor with tenderness in it.

A showy little man comes home to a funeral

Jimmy Fallows waits on a riverbank for a passenger who is hours late. Jimmy runs a boardinghouse called Your Hotel, and he jokes that the man has a talent for missing things.

When D. Webster Opp finally appears, he is about thirty-five. He wears a plaid suit, a huge scarf pin and new tan shoes, all chosen to be noticed. The only small thing about him is himself. He has come for the funeral of Mr. Moore, his stepfather.

On the launch he pours out plans. He sells shoes now, and he means to buy all the land between Turtle Creek and the river, because oil lies under it. Jimmy asks sensible questions, and Mr. Opp floats right over them. He is drunk, but only on his own imagination.

Big talk often hides a tender heart.
