Córka Montezumy in short

Montezuma's Daughter follows one man's oath across the whole of the Spanish conquest. Thomas Wingfield, half English and half Spanish, loses his mother to her cousin Juan de Garcia and swears to kill him. The chase takes him from Norfolk to Seville, over a stormy sea and into the heart of the Aztec empire.

What Córka Montezumy is about

Can one wrong ever bring about a right? Thomas Wingfield, an English gentleman, spends a very long life answering that question. In Montezuma's Daughter, he is an old man in Norfolk in 1588. News of the Spanish Armada's defeat has just reached him, and he sits down at last to write the story Queen Elizabeth once asked him to tell.

H. Rider Haggard wrote this adventure novel. It carries you from a quiet lane in Ditchingham to Seville, a slave ship, the sacrificial stones of Tobasco and the court of Montezuma. Thomas is half English and half Spanish, and among the Aztecs he becomes a captive, a god, a general and a husband. Behind it all stands one claim: wrong breeds wrong, and it falls on the hand that did it.

Dla kogo. You will love this book if you enjoy swift historical adventure, grand sieges and sea escapes, and a hero who loves two women across two worlds. It suits readers drawn to ancient Mexico and tales of sworn revenge.

The story in 10 parts

An old man writes to explain his life

The story opens in 1588, in the marketplace at Bungay. Thomas Wingfield, very old, hears that Spain's Armada is beaten. The news stirs a memory of the Queen, who once asked him about his twenty years among the Indians of Anahuac, the land now called Mexico.

He tells the lesson of his life before the tale begins. No wrong can bring about a right, he says, and every wrong falls back on the hand that made it. He points to Cortes, who died poor and disgraced, and to the Aztecs, who fed their gods with human lives and lost their country. He expects Spain to pay for its own cruelty.

His English wife Lily died last Christmas Day. He waited until then to write because the story holds another wife, Otomie, and children whom Lily could never share. Once he woke from a dream of his dead sons and called their names aloud, and Lily, hurt, thought of their own buried baby. It was their only quarrel.

The whole tale is a confession, told by a man who has paid for his choices.
