Uśmiech Moloka in short
Molok's Smile follows a single idea through a whole city. A homeless couple, a servant in a cellar, a family with an old name and a young man with cold ambition are all linked by one fact, that a home has become something to buy and sell. Stråvall rises by learning where the law is silent, and he wraps each deal in the language of social care.
What Uśmiech Moloka is about
What does it cost to own a roof over other people's heads? A young engineer and his fiancée search a crowded city for one home and cannot find it. Meanwhile a slight, smiling director with a cherry-pink face quietly buys the houses they search.
Molok's Smile is a Swedish social novel by Daniel Berg, set in a Stockholm short of homes in the years of the Spanish flu. Berg follows a rising property dealer, Adrian Stråvall, and the old noble family he hopes will lift him into society. You get a close portrait of ambition at work, and you see how a housing market becomes a trap, step by step, with the law looking on.
Dla kogo. This book suits readers who like social novels with a sharp eye for money and class, stories of cities and their homes, and characters who reveal themselves through small habits and calculations.

A loving couple cannot find a home
The story opens with a happy family and a problem that money decides. Lecturer Tedelius lives on Sturegatan with his wife and six children. His daughter Hervor is engaged to Folke Hjelm, a young engineer. A year and a half go by and they still have nowhere to live.
Berg shows the search in small, painful steps. The couple climb dark back stairs and learn that a plain three-room flat costs four thousand kronor just to take over. Hervor queues with other young couples and goes home to cry into her cushions. Then Folke hears that a director named Stråvall may have apartments free.
Stråvall inspects Folke with a cold sneer and asks about his salary and his friends. A home here is a favor to be won. A decent, loving pair is held back by a market that sells shelter like any other goods.
