Manalive in short
Manalive follows a single idea from its first page to its last. A gale carries Innocent Smith into a dreary boardinghouse, and his leaps, pranks and pistol shots wake the people inside. They first call him mad, and the book then asks who is really sane.
What Manalive is about
What happens when a gale throws a man in green clothes over a garden wall and into a gloomy London boardinghouse? He chases a runaway hat up a tree and crowns a startled doctor with it. Within a day, four people are dancing around a bush that is not there.
Manalive is a comic novel by G. K. Chesterton. It begins as a farce about a wild guest, becomes a mock trial, and ends as a quiet argument for being glad to be alive. You get the arrival of Innocent Smith, the garden proposals, the shots that frighten a doctor, and the strange court that judges him.
Dla kogo. You will love this if you enjoy comic fiction full of paradox and fast talk, or stories where a madcap stranger wakes a household and makes you see ordinary things again.

A great wind brings a stranger over the wall
The book opens with weather. A good wind rises in the west and sweeps across England. It lifts a hammock like a balloon. When it strikes the north London hill where Beacon House stands, it finds five people standing about a cold garden with nothing to do.
Dr. Warner is a large, bland, famous young scientist in a silk hat. Arthur Inglewood is shy and kind and nearly invisible. Michael Moon is a lean Irish journalist with a gloomy joking manner. Rosamund Hunt is a cheerful heiress, and Diana Duke is the sharp niece who runs the house.
Then a Panama hat sails over the wall, followed by a green umbrella, a yellow bag and a large fair man in green clothes. He lands on two legs and catches his hat with his feet. When the wind takes Warner's top hat into a tree, the stranger fetches it and hangs upside down to crown the doctor with it. Every hat, he says, is a crown.
Sometimes it takes a gust of surprise to make you notice that you are awake.

How it ends (spoiler)
The court acquits Smith, and the company bursts into the garden to celebrate. Michael Moon is revealed to be right about the many marriages. Smith has only ever had one wife, Mary Gray, whom he keeps winning again. Moon and Rosamund dance, and Inglewood kisses Diana. Warner leaves for a dinner. Smith lights a huge fire on the roof and shouts the name of the house, and when the party looks for him and Mary, they have vanished into the windy night.
