Lizys in short

Lysis is a conversation in one afternoon, and it moves in clear steps. Hippothales loves a boy and praises him badly, so Socrates shows what honest talk looks like. He tells Lysis that people trust and love us where we are wise and useful.

What Lizys is about

Who is a friend? Most of us think we know. Yet when Socrates puts the question to two Athenian boys at a festival, every answer they offer falls apart within a few lines.

This is the puzzle at the heart of Lysis, a short dialogue by Plato. Socrates tells the story himself, looking back on one afternoon at a new wrestling school. A young man named Hippothales loves a boy called Lysis and begs Socrates for help. Socrates shows him how to talk with a beloved. You follow each idea about friendship as it is tried, doubted and set aside.

Dla kogo. Readers who enjoy sharp questions about love, friendship and desire will love this dialogue. It also suits those who like a clever mind testing its own ideas, and newcomers wanting a first taste of Plato.

Praise your beloved too soon and you lose

Socrates is walking from the Academy to the Lyceum when he meets Hippothales and a group of young men. They invite him into a newly built wrestling school. Socrates asks who the favorite among them is, and Hippothales turns bright red.

His friend Ctesippus explains the blush. Hippothales loves a boy called Lysis and can speak of nothing else. He writes poems about the boy and sings them in a dreadful voice. Their theme is not the boy himself but his wealthy family, its horses and its victories at the great games.

Socrates does not mock the love. He finds fault with the method. Hippothales sings hymns of victory before he has won anything, so the songs really praise himself. If the boy slips away, the lover looks foolish. Even before the boy is won, praise makes him proud and vain, and that makes him far tougher to win.

Socrates puts it as a hunter's problem. A hunter who frightens his prey and makes it wilder is a bad hunter. Hippothales sees the point and begs for advice. Socrates offers to show how a lover might talk with a boy instead of singing at him. Hippothales hides behind the crowd to listen.

Praise that swells the beloved's pride serves the lover, while honest talk serves them both.

Pytania o Lizys

What is Lysis by Plato about?

It is a conversation in which Socrates asks two Athenian boys, Lysis and Menexenus, what a friend is. They test whether friendship comes from love given, likeness, difference, need or desire, and none of the answers settles the matter.

Who are Lysis, Menexenus and Hippothales?

Lysis is a young, well-born Athenian boy. Menexenus is his close friend. Hippothales is an older youth who loves Lysis and writes poems for him, and Socrates uses the boys to show him how to speak to a beloved.

Does Lysis give a final definition of friendship?

The dialogue tests several definitions, such as the lover, the beloved, like, opposite and the congenial, and it stays open. What it gives is a way to think, with strong reasons on each side, that readers can carry into their own lives.

Is Lysis easy to follow for a first-time reader of Plato?

Yes, in the sense that it is short and set in one lively scene, with simple examples such as chariots, soup, hair and wine. Socrates asks plain questions and the boys answer in short lines, so each step is clear.

What is the main message of Lysis?

Friendship is tied to desire and to the good, and we love what we lack or what is akin to us. Plato also shows that real conversation, with honest questions, is a better way to reach someone than flattery.
