The Avenging of the Saviour in short

The Avenging of the Saviour tells one story in three movements. A sick prince is healed by belief alone. He and Vespasian then besiege Jerusalem until famine brings surrender, and the legend reads that fall as the answer to the death of Jesus.

What The Avenging of the Saviour is about

What would you do if a stranger's words could heal a wound that no physician can touch? In this legend, a Roman prince with a cancer eating his face hears one short report about a healer he has never met, and he is made whole at once. Then he sets out across the sea to punish the people who put that healer to death.

The Avenging of the Saviour is an anonymous Christian legend, known in Latin as the Vindicta Salvatoris. It ties the Roman destruction of Jerusalem in 70 CE to the death of Jesus, and it joins that to a tale of a holy portrait that carries healing to Rome. You meet Titus, Vespasian, Nathan, Velosianus and Veronica.

Dla kogo. You will enjoy this if you love apocryphal legends, early Christian storytelling, Roman and Judaean history, the tradition of Veronica, or swift narratives where miracles, empires and sieges meet.

A storm drives a stranger to a sick prince

The legend opens in the days of the emperor Tiberius, when Pontius Pilate governs Judaea and Jesus has been handed over to death. Far from Jerusalem lives a prince named Titus. He has a cancer that began in his right nostril and has eaten his face as far as the eye.

At the same time a man named Nathan, son of Nahum, sets out from Judaea. He has been sent to Tiberius in Rome with a treaty from Judaea. The emperor himself is sick, covered with ulcers and fevers and nine kinds of leprosy, so the story gives both rulers a wound before it gives them a cure.

A north wind drives Nathan's ship into the harbor of Titus's city. Titus summons him and asks whether he knows any herb or ointment that could heal his face. Nathan knows no such remedy. But he tells of a prophet called Emmanuel, who turned water into wine, cleansed lepers, gave sight to a man born blind and raised three people from the dead. He also names Veronica, who bled for twelve years until she touched the fringe of the prophet's garment.

Nathan offers no medicine, only testimony, and testimony sets everything else moving. A good report about Jesus, told in plain words, can turn a stranger's bad luck into the start of a new life.

How it ends (spoiler)

In Rome, Velosianus spreads out his shawl with the cloth of gold and the portrait of the Lord upon it. Tiberius looks at it, adores the image with a pure heart, and his flesh is made clean as a little child's. Everyone present who is sick is healed too. Tiberius then asks about baptism, and Nathan baptizes him. Healed of all his diseases, he praises God and is fully instructed in the articles of the faith.

Pytania o The Avenging of the Saviour

What is The Avenging of the Saviour about?

It is a Christian legend in which Titus is healed of a facial cancer by faith in Christ, besieges Jerusalem with Vespasian, and Tiberius sends an envoy to find a healer, who returns with Veronica's portrait of Jesus.

What is the Vindicta Salvatoris?

Vindicta Salvatoris is the Latin name of this legend, meaning the Vengeance of the Saviour. It survives in several medieval versions and is counted among Christian apocryphal writings that retell the fall of Jerusalem and the story of Veronica.

Who is Veronica in this legend?

Veronica is the woman healed of twelve years of bleeding when she touched the fringe of Jesus's garment. In the legend she keeps a portrait of him, is questioned by Velosianus, and follows it by ship to Rome.

Is the story historically accurate and when was it written?

It is a legend, not a history. Jerusalem did fall to Titus's army in 70 CE, but Tiberius lived earlier and the siege lasted months. Many scholars place the Latin text in the early Middle Ages, built on older traditions.

Why is it left out of the Bible?

It arose centuries after the New Testament, long after the biblical books were gathered, and it was never part of an official canon. Medieval readers still copied it, valuing it as devotional storytelling about Jesus, Veronica and the fall of Jerusalem.
