Ars Notoria in short

The Ars Notoria presents itself as a gift of wisdom given by an angel to King Solomon, and passed on through Apollonius. It teaches that memory, eloquence and understanding can be asked of God through prayers, sacred notes, and a careful routine tied to the moon and the hours. The book moves through opening prayers, hidden knowledge and notes for the arts, then ten prayers, followed by further dream and memory rituals.

What Ars Notoria is about

What if a prayer could open the mind the way a key opens a door? That is the promise of the Ars Notoria, a handbook of devotion that presents itself as the method by which King Solomon received wisdom from an angel. Its first lines are a plea to Christ, the wisdom of the Father, to light the mind with the Holy Spirit, so that memory, understanding and speech grow strong.

The actual author is unknown, but Solomon and Apollonius are named. The earliest manuscripts date from the thirteenth century, and older Jewish, Greek and Christian devotion lies beneath them. Robert Turner's English version of 1657 is how many readers have met it. You will hear how it is arranged, why some prayers go unexplained, and what warnings it gives.

Dla kogo. This is for readers who love medieval prayer books, Solomonic lore and the history of memory and learning, and for anyone curious how people once asked heaven for eloquence and a steady mind.

The notory art claims an angelic origin

The book opens by naming itself. It is the Notory Art that the highest Creator showed to Solomon. In this account the king wonders how knowledge comes to a person, and an angel brings him a book. Inside are figures and prayers for every art, and the angel teaches him the way a child is taught the basics.

The word notory comes from the Latin for a mark or a note. The notes are small figures that stand for a whole field of learning. The text says the art holds the knowledge of all arts in a few short notes, while other arts fill long books and tire the student. Its promise is learning in a short time, with memory and fluent speech.

Apollonius speaks as the friend and successor of Solomon. He says he will explain the rules, the proper days and hours, and the course of the moon. Albertus Magnus is reported to have condemned the work as a shortcut around honest study. Others copied it for centuries anyway. The book asks to be read as a gift passed from God through an angel to a king.

The book is a gift of wisdom, framed as prayer, not a trick for the idle.
