Lewy guard Gilbert in short

Left Guard Gilbert follows one autumn at Brimfield Academy. Don Gilbert, a steady Kansas boy with a burned hand, arrives late and must earn a place on a team that already doubts him. He coaches beginners, joins a night adventure at a barn fire, and gets a chance at left guard.

What Lewy guard Gilbert is about

Why would a boy who has just climbed out of a burning train say almost nothing about it? Don Gilbert, seventeen, comes into Brimfield Academy days late, his left hand wrapped in a black silk handkerchief.

Left Guard Gilbert is a school football story by Ralph Henry Barbour, who wrote many such books for boys in the early twentieth century. It follows one autumn at a boarding school near Long Island Sound, from the first hot practice to the great game against Claflin School. You get a steady hero, a loyal and funny friend, a sharp little trainer, and a school full of jokes and rivalries. You will see how a quiet boy earns respect without ever asking for it.

Dla kogo. Readers who enjoy school stories, team sports and warm friendships will love this book, as will those drawn to quiet heroes and the excitement of a big game.

The story in 11 parts

A late arrival with a hurt hand

Don Gilbert comes from Osawatomie, Kansas, and reaches Brimfield days after football practice has begun. A railway wreck delayed him. The principal, Mr. Fernald, half believes the excuse and gives him a lecture anyway.

Don greets his roommate Tim Otis with a flying cushion, and their old teasing resumes at once. Tim is quick and talkative. Don is taller, heavier and slow to speak, with a drawl and an unhurried smile.

Don tells the story of the wreck in plain words. Two engines struck, fire and steam followed, and passengers climbed out through the windows. He says almost nothing about his own part. The coach, Mr. Robey, tells him to have the hand treated and promises nothing. Don feels the lost week at once.

A late start can cost you a place, but how you answer it shows what you are made of.
