Lady Chatterley's Lover in short

This is the story of a woman who has lost touch with her own body. Connie marries Clifford, who comes home from the war paralyzed, and they live on talk and ideas. A quick affair with Michaelis leaves her colder.

What Lady Chatterley's Lover is about

Can a woman come back to life in a house where nobody touches her? Constance Chatterley is the young wife of a baronet paralyzed in the war. She lives at Wragby Hall under a sky stained by coal smoke, growing thin and restless. Then she walks into the wood, and a gamekeeper looks her in the eye.

Lady Chatterley's Lover was written by D. H. Lawrence, who died in 1930. It is set in the English Midlands after the First World War, and it is his plea to bring feeling and the body back into a world run by talk, money and machines. You will hear how Connie moves from numbness to desire, and what Lawrence argues through her.

Dla kogo. Readers who enjoy love stories shaped by big ideas, English coal-town settings, and arguments about class and desire will love this novel.

The war leaves a marriage without touch

Constance Reid marries Clifford Chatterley in 1917, during a month of his leave from the army. Months later he comes home from Flanders badly broken, and by 1920 he is a baronet paralyzed from the hips down. The couple settle at Wragby Hall, his family home in the smoky Midlands.

Connie grew up among painters and cultured socialists. As a girl she studied in Dresden and treated love as a small part of talk. Clifford is shy among working people, yet he takes his title and house with great seriousness. He writes clever stories, and Connie helps him shape them.

Wragby looks out on Tevershall pit and its burning waste heap. The village below is rows of black brick, and soot settles even on the Christmas roses. Clifford sees the miners as parts of the pit, not as men. The two share ideas but not bodies, and neither can say so aloud. Connie's trouble begins with a marriage where talk has taken the place of touch.

Pytania o Lady Chatterley's Lover

What is Lady Chatterley's Lover about?

It tells of Constance Chatterley, whose husband Clifford is paralyzed in the war. Lonely at Wragby Hall, she forms a bond with Mellors, the gamekeeper. Through their love Lawrence explores class, money, industry and the place of the body in life.

Who is Mellors in Lady Chatterley's Lover?

Oliver Mellors is the gamekeeper on Clifford's estate. Born in the village of Tevershall, he served as a soldier, lives alone in a cottage by the wood, and speaks both broad dialect and standard English as he chooses.

Why was Lady Chatterley's Lover banned?

Lawrence wrote frank love scenes and used plain four-letter words that many readers and authorities of the time found shocking. Several countries banned it, and for years it was known mostly in cut editions.

When was Lady Chatterley's Lover written and is it a true story?

Lawrence wrote it in the late 1920s, and it is set just after the First World War. It is a novel, though it draws on the coal-mining Midlands he knew well from his own boyhood.

What is the main message of Lady Chatterley's Lover?

Lawrence argues that a life of the mind alone, ruled by money and machines, leaves people numb. He holds up tenderness, warm feeling and an honest relation to the body as the way back to being fully alive.
