Just So Stories in short

Just So Stories gathers twelve tales that each answer a child's question about how something came to be. Each answer arrives through a small scene with a trick or a bargain, then a rhyme. Some tales are brisk fables of vanity and idleness.

What Just So Stories is about

Why does no whale swallow sailors today? Because, says the very first tale, a clever Mariner once jammed a wooden grating into a Whale's throat and tied it in place with his own suspenders. That is the way of Just So Stories. A plain question about the world gets a cheeky, made-up answer, told as if the storyteller had been there.

Rudyard Kipling wrote these twelve tales in the early 1900s for young listeners, including his own children.

Dla kogo. You will love this book if you enjoy bedtime tales, animal fables, wordplay and rhythm, or if you read to children and want stories that sound good aloud.

The story in 8 parts

  1. Key idea 1 · free to read

A clever sailor and an idle camel

The book opens with a Whale who has eaten every fish in the sea except one small Stute Fish. To save his own skin, he asks the Whale if he has ever tasted Man. Nice, he says, but lumpy. He tells the Whale where to find one, on a raft far out at sea.

The shipwrecked Mariner is a man of endless resource and good sense, and he proves it from inside the Whale. He stamps, thumps and dances hornpipes until the Whale has the hiccups. When the Whale begs him to come out, he names his price. Take him home to the white cliffs of Albion, and he will think about it. Meanwhile he makes a lattice from the raft and ties it with his suspenders.

The Camel tale has the same bounce. At the beginning of time, the Horse, the Dog and the Ox each ask the Camel to join the work. Each gets one word, Humph. Then the Djinn in charge of all deserts rolls in on a cloud of dust. He gives the Camel a humph of his own, a lump on the back that lets him work three days without food, to make up for the three days he missed. In these first tales, wit solves the problem and idleness gets its bill.

  2. 2

Cake crumbs and shadows change two animals

The Rhinoceros tale begins on an island off the Red Sea, where a Parsee bakes a cake two feet across and three feet thick, full of currants and plums.

Characters, plot and themes

Main characters

  • The Mariner A shipwrecked sailor of endless resource and good sense who outwits the Whale with a raft, a jackknife and his suspenders.
  • The Elephant's Child A young, polite and very curious Elephant who walks across Africa to find out what the Crocodile eats for dinner.
  • Taffy A small, bold girl of the Tribe of Tegumai who draws the first letter and helps her father make the alphabet.
  • Tegumai Bopsulai Taffy's father, a patient and cheerful hunter who loves fishing and joins in her game of sound pictures.
  • The Cat The wildest animal of all, who wants the warm cave and the milk but refuses to be anyone's friend or servant.
  • The Eldest Magician A kindly, humorous maker who teaches each animal its play and sets the runaway Crab right.
  • Suleiman-bin-Daoud The wise king with a magic ring who is tired of quarrelling wives and does not want to show off.
  • Balkis The Head Queen, almost as wise as her husband, who helps him with a clever plan and a sense of fun.

How it ends (spoiler)

Each tale ends with its answer. The Whale is left with a grating that lets him eat only small fish, the Camel keeps his hump, and the Elephant's Child brings home a trunk that ends the spankings. Taffy and her father finish the alphabet. The Cat wins his place by the fire and still keeps his freedom. In the last tale, the Butterfly's stamp frightens the quarrelsome queens, and Solomon and Balkis live happily together.
