John Barleycorn in short

John Barleycorn follows one man from a five-year-old with a pail of beer to a famous author struggling with the liquor cabinet. London shows that no single moment made him a drinker. Poverty, curiosity, companionship, work and then success each opened a door, and a saloon stood behind every one of them.

What John Barleycorn is about

What if the friendliest face in every port was the one that wanted you dead? That is the question Jack London asks in John Barleycorn, his memoir of a life spent beside alcohol. It opens on an election day in California, when London rides down from his ranch, has several drinks, and votes for women's suffrage.

Published in 1913, the book calls alcohol John Barleycorn and treats him as a charming rascal. London says he was never a born alcoholic. He was trained into drinking, one saloon and one friendship at a time, over twenty years.

Dla kogo. Readers who love candid memoir, sea and frontier adventure, and Jack London's storytelling voice will find plenty here, along with anyone curious about how habits form.

A drinker on election day names his enemy

The memoir opens in California on election day. Jack London rides from his ranch to the village in the Valley of the Moon to vote. The day is warm, so he takes several drinks before he votes and several more afterward. At supper his wife, Charmian, asks how he voted on women's suffrage.

He voted yes. Women will vote for prohibition, he says. They are the wives, sisters and mothers who pay for what men drink, and they will drive the nails into the coffin of John Barleycorn. Charmian points out that he has always seemed a friend of that old rogue.

His answer is a string of opposites. John Barleycorn is the king of liars and the frankest truth-teller. Then London lays out his case. He was not born with a hunger for alcohol. He gradually learned to enjoy alcohol, but twenty years passed before he developed a craving for it. Every road of adventure ran through the saloon.

Easy access, not inborn weakness, made him a drinker.

Pytania o John Barleycorn

What is John Barleycorn about?

It is Jack London's memoir of how alcohol shaped his life, from a drunken childhood episode to his years as a famous author. He argues that easy access, not inborn craving, turned him into a regular drinker.

Who is John Barleycorn in the book?

John Barleycorn is London's name for alcohol, treated as a person. He is a charming companion who loosens tongues, wins friends and gives strength, and yet leads toward death. London calls him both a liar and a truth-teller.

Is John Barleycorn a true story?

Yes, it is autobiographical. London draws on his own life in Oakland, on San Francisco Bay, at sea, in the Klondike and on his California ranch. It was published in 1913 and reads as a personal confession with an argument.

What does White Logic mean in John Barleycorn?

White Logic is London's phrase for the clear, cold pessimism that heavy drinking brings to a thoughtful mind. It strips away comforting illusions about life and meaning, and then urges another drink to forget what it has shown.

What is the main message of John Barleycorn?

London's message is that drinking is mostly a habit of mind, taught by society and made easy by open saloons. He urges that alcohol be made hard to obtain so young people are not trained to want it.
