Jane Seton, czyli królewski rzecznik in short

A joyful royal welcome brings together a pair of lovers, a hunted earl, a stern cardinal and a judge who wants what he cannot have. Redhall uses warrants, ambushes, poisons and a court of law to remove his rival and take the woman for himself. Roland and the earl answer with swords, boats, ropes and sheer nerve.

What Jane Seton, czyli królewski rzecznik is about

Imagine a city so full of flowers and wine that a hunted man can walk its streets unnoticed in a farmer's coat. On 19 May 1537, Edinburgh rings its bells for King James V and his young French queen. In the crowd stands the outlawed Earl of Ashkirk in disguise, while the King's Advocate, Sir Adam Otterburn, watches a balcony of ladies and burns with a secret longing.

Jane Seton; Or, the King's Advocate is a historical romance by the Scottish writer James Grant. He wove real history and old Fife legends into a tale of love, jealousy and a court of law turned into a weapon. You get pageants, duels, sieges and trials, and a villain torn between love and hatred.

Dla kogo. For readers who love Scottish history, castles and sword fights, courtly love that tests loyalty, and villains with a tormented heart.

The story in 10 parts

Edinburgh welcomes its king and French queen

The story opens on 19 May 1537, when Edinburgh welcomes King James V home from France with his bride, Magdalene of Valois. Bells ring, fountains run with wine, and armed craftsmen line the High Street.

Grant uses the procession as a map of Scotland's powers. The royal guards ride first, then the nobles, then Cardinal David Beaton in scarlet. The queen follows, lovely but already pale with illness.

Not every face is happy. Gentlemen of the Douglas name walk the street with armed followers and meet the jeers with silent scorn. James has driven their chief into exile in England.

One balcony holds the heart of the tale. On it sits Jane Seton, who throws the king a rose, and he pins the flower to his collar.

A public festival can hide the private quarrels that will drive a whole story.
