Jane Eyre: An Autobiography in short

Jane Eyre follows one woman from a child's rebellion to a woman's hard choices. At Gateshead, Jane learns that injustice makes her angry. At Lowood, she learns that cold, hunger, and sermons can be endured, and that Helen Burns and Miss Temple show her another kind of strength.

What Jane Eyre: An Autobiography is about

What happens to a child who is told every day that she is nothing? Jane Eyre begins with ten-year-old Jane hiding behind a red curtain with a book of bird pictures, while her cousin hunts her down to knock her to the floor. From that small, bruised moment, a whole life grows.

Charlotte Brontë published Jane Eyre in 1847 under the name Currer Bell, as the autobiography of its heroine. Jane is an orphan, poor and plain by her own account, yet she has a sharp eye and a fierce sense of fairness. You follow her from cold Gateshead to hungry Lowood to Thornfield Hall, and you hear what the book argues about pride, faith, and equality.

Dla kogo. You will love this book if you enjoy a strong first-person voice, a love story built on equality, brooding houses with secrets, and a heroine who speaks her mind.

A child with no place at Gateshead

On a freezing November afternoon, ten-year-old Jane Eyre curls up behind a red curtain with a book of birds. She is an orphan living on the charity of her aunt, Mrs. Reed, who shuts her out of the family circle.

Her cousin John Reed finds her at once. He tells her the books and the house are his, and he throws the heavy volume at her head. For the first time, Jane fights back, and she calls him wicked and cruel. The servants see only a wild girl attacking the young master.

Mrs. Reed orders Jane locked in the red room, where her husband died. Jane sits alone as the light fades, sees a strange moving light on the wall, screams, and faints. A girl taught that she is worthless does not become meek, she becomes a rebel.

Jane's rebellion begins as a child's cry for fairness.
