Jack O’ Judgment in short

Jack O' Judgment follows a powerful blackmailer, Colonel Dan Boundary, whom the law cannot touch. He buys firms for a fraction of their worth by holding scandal over their owners, and his gang uses poison and kidnapping when it must. Stafford King hunts him in court and in the street, but his proof keeps dying.

What Jack O’ Judgment is about

A young man lies dead in a Lambeth gutter on a snowy night. In his pocket are a tin of cocaine and a single playing card, the Jack of Clubs. Nobody is ever charged. Three months later a soiled Jack of Clubs arrives at Colonel Dan Boundary's palatial apartment in Albemarle Place.

Jack O' Judgment is a fast crime thriller by Edgar Wallace. Colonel Dan Boundary buys businesses for a twentieth of their worth by holding scandal over their owners. Against him stand a detective, a stage mimic named Maisie White, and a masked figure in black silk. You get a villain who talks like a kindly uncle, and one question: who hides behind the white handkerchief?

Dla kogo. Readers who enjoy a cunning villain, a masked avenger and a chase through lamplit London will find plenty here. Anyone who likes to guess a hidden identity will feel at home.

A Playing Card Haunts a Powerful Man

Colonel Dan Boundary lives in a grand flat in Albemarle Place and wants for nothing. One morning a letter marked private holds only a soiled Knave of Clubs with a name along its edge. The words are Jack o' Judgment. The colonel tosses it away, but he cannot toss away the face it calls to mind.

That face belongs to Snow Gregory, a gambler who once worked for him. Gregory was shot dead in a Lambeth gutter with the same card on his body. A coroner's jury blamed persons unknown.

More cards arrive. So the colonel asks Stafford King, the detective who has spent three years trying to break his gang, to hear his complaint. He calls himself a law-abiding citizen libeled for twenty years. King lists the bargains in his past, and the colonel only smiles and says there is no law against a bargain.

The law is watching Boundary, while someone else has already begun to judge him. A single card has begun to crack his calm face.
