Indyjskie opowieści o duchach in short
Indian Ghost Stories is a book of short accounts, each told as something the author knows from a witness he trusts or from the newspapers. A preface states his terms, with no cat or monkey at the end. Then come a photograph, haunted bungalows, cursed meals and visits at the hour of death.
What Indyjskie opowieści o duchach is about
What if the ghost in a ghost story is not a cat, a dog or a monkey in the last paragraph? In Indian Ghost Stories, S. Mukerji sets out to give you the other kind of tale. These are accounts told as true, though some end with a comic unmasking.
The book was put together in Calcutta, with a preface dated July 1914. The author heard such stories as a child from his nurse and later from judges and magistrates. You get a photograph with one woman too many, a courtroom case about a haunted lease, a rich man who cannot eat, and a family warned of death by a groan in a temple.
Dla kogo. You will love this book if you enjoy campfire tales told as sworn fact, if colonial India's courts, bungalows and railway carriages interest you, or if you like to weigh a strange story and decide for yourself.

The author says these tales are true
S. Mukerji opens with a doubt. He does not know whether writing ghost stories is a mistake. The usual English ghost story, he says, ends with the ghost unmasked as a cat, a dog or a mischievous boy. Readers like that, because they enjoy a little fear and still want to be told that ghosts do not exist.
The last such tale he read ended with a young woman's ghost becoming a monkey. He calls that bathos taken too far. To show that real events can take the breath away, he prints a newspaper item about events in Texas. A jilted bride kills herself, and her brother fires at the faithless lover. The bullet lodges in a tree, and the brother then shoots himself. Twenty years later the lover and his son cut down that tree, then use dynamite to break it apart. The old bullet flies out and kills him.
Then he turns to India, where ghosts are treated with respect and fear. He heard his tales from judges, magistrates and officials, and he offers them as true to the best of his knowledge. He admits some may sound like cock and bull stories. He asks readers to remember that there are more things in heaven and earth than we dream of.
The book asks for a fair hearing, not blind belief.

Pytania o Indyjskie opowieści o duchach
What is Indian Ghost Stories about?
It is a collection of short accounts of ghosts, hauntings and omens in India, told as true by S. Mukerji. They range from a haunted lease heard in court to a photograph of a dead wife and curses on rich men.
Is Indian Ghost Stories based on true events?
The author says he includes only stories true to the best of his knowledge and belief. He heard them from officials and friends, and he adds newspaper clippings from 1913 and 1914 to support some of them.

Smith and Jones are stand-in names the author uses for real people he does not wish to identify. They appear in the dead wife's photograph, and again in the neighbours' tale of the hammer on the stairs.
Is Indian Ghost Stories easy to read?
Yes, the chapters are short and told in a plain, chatty voice, often with dialogue and clear settings. Each chapter is a self-contained account, so you can read them one at a time.
