Dzieło in short

His Masterpiece follows one painter from the night a stranger shelters in his garret to the struggle with a canvas that will not be finished. Claude Lantier dreams of painting life in true light, and his friends share the dream. Instead they meet laughter at the Salon, poverty, quarrels and the pull of safer success.

What Dzieło is about

At two in the morning a thunderstorm breaks over Paris, and a young painter named Claude Lantier finds a drenched girl huddled against his door. He is shy, rough and sure she is lying to him.

His Masterpiece was written by Émile Zola and first published in French in 1886 as L'Oeuvre. It belongs to his series of novels about one extended family, and it draws on the world of young painters and writers that Zola knew. Few novels show so closely what it costs to make something new.

You meet Claude, Christine and the novelist Sandoz. You follow the angry crowds at the Salon, a village idyll on the Seine, and the huge canvas of Paris that Claude cannot leave alone.

Dla kogo. You will love this if you enjoy stories of artists, friendships tested by ambition, vivid portraits of nineteenth century Paris, and characters who feel real. It suits anyone who has poured themselves into a creative project.

A stormy night brings Christine into Claude's life

The novel opens in July, as a storm catches Claude near the Hôtel de Ville. He runs home through the rain and finds a tall young woman in black pressed against his door. She is Christine, eighteen, new to Paris, soaked and shaking. Her story is simple, and Claude does not believe a word of it.

She says a train was late and a cabdriver left her at the wrong door. She was to work as companion to an old widow in Passy. Claude distrusts women and hides his shyness behind bluster, yet he gives her his bed and sleeps on the couch.

Morning shows him how wrong he is. Sunlight falls across the sleeping girl, and he sees the figure he has hunted for his big picture. He draws her, forgetting everything but the light on her skin. Each misreads the other, yet they part with a warm handshake. One night of shelter gives Claude his model and Christine her future.

  • Mahoudeau A struggling sculptor from Provence who models huge clay figures in a cold, damp shop and dreams of success.

How it ends (spoiler)

Unable to bring the nude woman at the center of his huge Paris canvas to life, Claude hangs himself in front of it one winter night. Christine, who had begged him to choose life with her, finds him at dawn and collapses. Only about ten mourners follow the coffin to a bleak new cemetery. Sandoz and Bongrand, his old friends, stand at the grave while trains whistle overhead, and Sandoz feels his own youth being buried.

Pytania o Dzieło

What is His Masterpiece by Zola about?

It tells the story of Claude Lantier, a Paris painter who dreams of a revolutionary painting of modern life. His friendship with the novelist Sandoz, his love for Christine and his struggle with one huge canvas form the heart of the book.

Who is Claude Lantier based on?

Claude is an invented painter, but many readers connect him and his circle with the young artists and writers Zola knew in 1860s Paris. Sandoz, the novelist who shares his dreams, is often read as a portrait of Zola himself.

What does the title His Masterpiece mean?

The title points to the great work Claude longs to produce, the picture that will justify his life. In French the novel is called L'Oeuvre, meaning the work. The book asks what such a work costs and who pays for it.

When was His Masterpiece written and is it part of a series?

Zola published it in 1886, in French, as one of the novels in his Rougon-Macquart series about one extended family. It can be read on its own, since the story of Claude and his friends is complete in itself.

Is His Masterpiece worth reading today?

It is a lively, human portrait of friendship, ambition and creative work, set against vivid scenes of Paris. Anyone who has chased a dream, made art or watched fashion change will find much that still feels true.
