Hedda Gabler in short

Hedda Gabler tells of a woman who marries for security and finds herself bored, scornful and afraid. In one house she meets her husband's kindness, an old friend's courage, a rival's brilliance and a family friend's patient scheming. Each asks something of her, and she gives back cruelty, charm or a loaded gun.

What Hedda Gabler is about

What happens when a clever, proud woman finds she has married into a life she cannot stand? Hedda Gabler opens on a bright morning in a freshly furnished villa, with bouquets around the room and a husband humming as he carries an empty suitcase. By the end of the first act, the new bride is talking about her dead father's pistols as a way to pass the time.

It is set in Christiania, now Oslo, in one drawing room. Hedda, a general's daughter, has just come home from her honeymoon with George Tesman, a gentle scholar.

Dla kogo. You will love this if you enjoy sharp psychological drama, unsettling heroines, and domestic settings that hold great tension, one room and one day at a time.

The story in 8 parts

  1. Key idea 1 · free to read

A new bride enters a house she dislikes

The play opens on a September morning in the villa of George Tesman. His aunt, Miss Juliana Tesman, arrives early with a bouquet and whispers with the old servant Berta, because the newlyweds still sleep after a wedding trip of nearly six months.

Tesman comes in, round faced and cheerful. A foreign university has just made him a doctor, and he expects to become a professor. His aunt adores him. She has even taken a mortgage on her own small annuity so that he can furnish the house. Tesman accepts this with little more than thanks.

Then Hedda enters, pale, with steel gray eyes and a cold calm. She greets the aunt politely, and within minutes she wounds her. She points to a bonnet on a chair and says the servant has left her old hat lying about. It is the aunt's brand new bonnet, bought to please Hedda.

When the aunt leaves, Hedda clenches her fists like a person in a cage. Tesman sees only what he wishes to see, and Hedda watches with a scorn she cannot speak openly.

Hedda's first cruelty shows a woman already trapped in her own marriage.

Hedda burns Lovborg's manuscript in the stove, then tells Tesman she did it for his sake. Lovborg dies from a shot fired in Mademoiselle Diana's rooms, with Hedda's pistol. Brack knows whose it is and uses that to hold her in his power. Rather than become his slave, Hedda goes into the back room and shoots herself in the temple while Tesman and Thea sort the notes.
