Serce i nauka in short

Heart and Science follows a young surgeon who falls in love at first sight and a girl who finds herself under the roof of a hostile aunt. Behind the romance runs a plain struggle over money, because her fortune would pass to her aunt if she died without a family. Around them move a jealous governess, a vain music teacher, a child who tells the truth, and a doctor whose laboratory no one may enter.

What Serce i nauka is about

A surgeon is ordered to rest and is due to sail tomorrow. Instead he takes one short walk across London, and a string of small accidents leads him into a concert hall behind a girl in black. Why does a man so careful with other people's bodies lose all caution over a single glance?

Heart and Science is a novel by Wilkie Collins, finished in April 1883. He wrote it against the belief that the growth of science always improves us. You get a love story, a family quarrel over a fortune, and a doctor whose work no one may see.

Dla kogo. This book suits readers who enjoy Victorian fiction with warm humor, sharp portraits of families and money, a love story under pressure, and a mystery behind a locked door.

    Small accidents lead Ovid astray

Ovid Vere, a surgeon of thirty-one, has driven his brain too hard and must rest. A friend's yacht waits to carry him to the Mediterranean. Still, he cannot sit idle, so he sets out to check a single fact for an unfinished medical chapter.

Collins fills the walk with trifles. A bargain lot of lace for his mother goes badly. A foul smell drives him into Covent Garden, where he gives strawberries to a ragged girl carrying a large baby. Then he takes a forgotten prescription to a patient near the British Museum.

Each detour looks pointless, and each is a link in a chain. Ovid never boards the yacht. Half dreaming, he steps aside for two women in mourning, and the girl's eyes meet his for one instant. He follows them into a concert hall.

Small, unplanned steps can lead a person to the one meeting that changes a life.
