Hawajskie podania ludowe in short

Hawaiian Folk Tales gathers the oral tradition of the islands. It opens with creation and flood chants, then moves through tricksters, Pele, journeys to the land of the dead, healers, giants, and heroes. It ends with the Menehune, love stories tied to valleys and cliffs, and the gods of the sea.

What Hawajskie podania ludowe is about

What would you do if your mother's cloth never dried because the days were too short? In Hawaiian Folk Tales, a young man named Maui twists coconut fiber into a cord and goes up a mountain to catch the sun. In another tale, a lover wears a rotten smell and swings down a hole in the sea to bring his dead sweetheart home.

Thomas G. Thrum gathered these tales in Honolulu after they ran for years in The Hawaiian Annual, dating his note January 1, 1907. He wrote with a sense of loss, because the bards who sang them were gone. Each tale is anchored to a real place on the islands.

Dla kogo. This book is for readers who love myths and legends, tales told around a fire, and the lore of islands and oceans. It suits anyone curious about Polynesian culture.

Old chants echo stories from other lands

The opening chapter, by the Reverend C. M. Hyde, asks a puzzling question. Why do some old Hawaiian legends resemble the history of the Old Testament? He builds his answer from the work of Judge Fornander, who gathered the chants of the islands.

In the creation chant, three gods named Kane, Ku, and Lono break apart the endless night and let light into space. They shape the first man from red earth and breathe into his nose, and he lives. A woman is made from his rib while he sleeps. Another legend tells of a flood, in which Nuu builds a great vessel and lands on Mauna Kea.

Fornander weighed two explanations, shipwrecked Spaniards or wandering Israelites, and found neither convincing. He thought Hebrew, Chaldean, and Polynesian peoples may all have drawn on a very old shared source. Hawaiian tradition carries its own deep memory of a shared human past.
