Rozrachunek rewolwerowca in short

Gunman's Reckoning follows a small, restless wanderer named Donnegan. He jumps from a freight train, finds a decaying ranch and meets a colonel who offers him work that consists of fighting. His job is to take the colonel's daughter Lou to The Corner and win her fiance back from a dance-hall beauty.

What Rozrachunek rewolwerowca is about

Picture a freight train rattling through Jericho Pass at night. Near its middle, a tramp called Lefty Joe boasts to a brakeman about the gang he once led. Two cars back, a small red-haired man sleeps, and Lefty has a knife and a plan.

Gunman's Reckoning is a western by Max Brand, the pen name of Frederick Faust. It follows Donnegan, a wanderer who swears he hates work, into a gold camp called The Corner. You get a fast story of bluffs, duels and quiet love, built on one question: what will a man do for a woman who does not love him?

Dla kogo. Readers who love a quick western with clever bluffs, a boomtown full of schemers and a hero who fights for a girl who loves someone else will find plenty here.

A boastful tramp tells of his ruined gang

The story opens on a freight train climbing through Jericho Pass at night. Two men sit near the middle, talking over the noise. One is a brakeman hungry for gossip. The other is Lefty Joe, a tramp who has paid the brakeman fifty cents and has a big past.

Lefty claims he once led a gang of road thieves, with Kennebec Lou, the Clipper and Suds under him. He tells it with the pride of a defeated general. Then he explains how it broke up, with one bitter word flung into the wind: Donnegan.

Suds cheated an old man at cards, and the old man was a friend of Donnegan. Kennebec Lou tried to stop Donnegan with a knife, and Donnegan beat him in five minutes and walked off whistling. Donnegan is a tornado that hits every ten miles and bends no grass in between. Lefty's fear paints the first portrait and makes you eager to see the real face.

A hero introduced by the terror of his enemies is already half won.
