Great Expectations in short

Great Expectations is the story of a poor boy who is given a great chance and nearly loses himself in it. Pip helps a convict on the marshes, plays at Satis House, falls in love with Estella, and is told by a London lawyer that a secret patron will make him a gentleman. Each stage moves him farther from Joe and the forge.

What Great Expectations is about

What would you do if a stranger in chains seized you in a graveyard and ordered you to bring him food? Pip, a small orphan raised by a harsh sister, does as he is told, and he steals a pork pie. That one act of fear and pity starts the life story that Charles Dickens published in weekly instalments in 1860 and 1861.

Great Expectations follows Pip from the misty marshes and the village forge to a dark house where a lady in a yellowed wedding dress sits among stopped clocks, and then to London after an unknown benefactor promises to make him a gentleman. Pip tells it himself, as a grown man looking back, and he is funny about the people around him. You hear how a boy who longs to be better than his home slowly learns what home was worth. The ending waits in the book itself.

Dla kogo. Readers who love vivid characters, dark humor, and tales of ambition will enjoy this novel. It suits those drawn to Victorian London, secrets, and the question of what we owe those who loved us first.

A frightened boy promises a convict help

The book opens in a bleak churchyard on the marshes, where a small boy reads the tombstones of his family. His name is Philip Pirrip, but he shortens it to Pip. He never saw his parents, so he invents their faces from the letters carved on the stones.

Then a terrible man springs up from among the graves. He wears a heavy iron on his leg, he is soaked and shivering, and he turns Pip upside down. He finds only a piece of bread and eats it like a starving dog. He orders Pip to bring a file and food to the old Battery at dawn, and to tell no one. Pip swears, and the man limps away toward the river.

Pip runs home to the forge, where his sister, Mrs. Mrs. Joe Gargery has raised him by hand. Her hand is heavy. Joe the blacksmith is gentle and kind, and he and Pip are fellow sufferers. A small kindness done under threat can echo for many years.
