Who Magwitch is
Magwitch confronts Pip in a country churchyard, where the orphan is looking at his family's gravestones. He is lame and hungry, and he seizes the boy to demand food and a file.
He orders Pip to keep their meeting secret and frightens him with threats of another man nearby. Pip promises to help, then steals food from home and a file from the forge.
Magwitch and the others in the story
The bond between Magwitch and Pip begins with fear, theft and a secret neither shares openly. When soldiers find Magwitch fighting another escaped convict in a ditch, he sees Pip among those watching.
Magwitch gives Pip a small sign that he will not betray him, protecting the boy who has helped him. His stern gratitude gives their connection a weight that reaches beyond the first frightening encounter.
