Godfrey Morgan in short
Godfrey Morgan is the story of a young man who thinks adventure is a game until it becomes a school. A banker buys an island at auction, sends his nephew off to see the world, and the nephew and his dancing teacher end up alone on a Pacific shore. They find fire in a lightning bolt, a home in a hollow tree, and help in a box on the sand.
What Godfrey Morgan is about
What would you do if an island in the Pacific went up for sale and nobody in the room dared to bid? In San Francisco, an auctioneer cries out an island to a crowd that only laughs. Then a calm voice names a price, and a rival with a grudge answers it, dollar for dollar.
This is Godfrey Morgan, a novel by Jules Verne. It follows a rich, idle young man who wants to see the world before he marries, and the nervous dancing teacher sent along as his companion. Verne writes a comic adventure in the tradition of Robinson Crusoe, with a steamer, a storm, a wreck, and an island where the two must learn to survive.
Dla kogo. You will enjoy this if you love castaway stories, gentle humor, and clever inventions made from almost nothing. It suits readers who like a mystery that keeps its secrets.

A rich man buys a useless island
On a chilly May day in San Francisco, an auction room fills with people who have come just to watch. Spencer Island is offered for sale, with a minimum sum required. It lies about 460 miles off the coast, in a calm patch of the Pacific that ships avoid. Nobody can think of a reason to own it.
The crowd answers the auctioneer with jokes. Then William W. Kolderup speaks. He is a banker and shipowner with 2000 branch offices and 500 ships. He bids twelve hundred thousand dollars, and the room falls silent. Just as the hammer comes down, a second voice bids thirteen hundred thousand.
It belongs to J. R. Taskinar, a gambler and grain dealer who weighs 490 pounds and hates Kolderup for his wealth. The two men raise the bids by hundreds of thousands. Kolderup stays calm and never gives in. At last he says four million, and Taskinar is left with a muttered promise of revenge.
Kolderup is practical, stubborn, and generous. Taskinar, beaten in public, is not a man who forgets.
A defeat in public is never quite the end of a quarrel.

Characters, plot and themes
Main characters
- Godfrey Morgan A rich, restless young man from San Francisco who wants to see the world before he marries and dreams of living like Crusoe.
- Phina Hollaney Kolderup's sixteen-year-old goddaughter, who loves Godfrey and clear-headedly lets him go, believing a love that cannot wait is not love.
- William W. Kolderup A vastly rich banker and shipowner who buys an island at auction and sends his nephew on a long voyage.
- Professor Tartlet The nervous dancing and deportment teacher sent with Godfrey, who fears the sea but clings to his fiddle and his manners.
- Captain Turcott The weathered sailor in command of the steamer Dream, blunt enough to argue with his rich employer.
- J. R. Taskinar A gambling grain dealer from Stockton who weighs 490 pounds, hates Kolderup, and vows to have his revenge.
- Seng Vou A Chinese actor who hides aboard the Dream to get home to China, and who keeps to himself.
How it ends (spoiler)
The Dream's arrival at Spencer Island is no rescue by chance. Uncle Will sank the ship on purpose, so the wreck, the savages, Carefinotu, the bear, and the tiger were all staged to teach Godfrey a lesson. Phina secretly sent the box. The real lions and crocodile came from the rival Taskinar, and Seng Vou made the smoke. Godfrey and Phina marry, and Tartlet stuffs his crocodile.
