Glinda z Krainy Oz in short

Glinda of Oz follows Ozma, the young Ruler of Oz, as she decides that a war among two unknown peoples is her business. With Dorothy beside her, she crosses a spider's web, a valley of mist and a winding mountain stair. She meets a dictator who keeps his brains in cans and a queen who rules a glass-domed island by fear.

What Glinda z Krainy Oz is about

What does a ruler do when she learns of a war in her own kingdom, among people she has never met? In Glinda of Oz, Princess Ozma is visiting the good Sorceress when a magic book prints a troubling line. The Skeezers have declared war on the Flatheads, but Ozma knows the Skeezers only as a place on a map.

L. Frank Baum wrote this tale as the last of his Oz books, and it appeared after his death in 1919. It is a quest with a gentle heart, full of spiders, mist, a dictator who keeps his brains in tin cans and an island under a glass dome. It is about duty, the limits of magic and what pride does to those who rule by fear.

Dla kogo. You will love this book if you enjoy fairy tales with clever magic, kind heroines and odd, lovable friends, and if you like gentle adventures where good sense and good manners count.

The story in 8 parts

  1. Key idea 1 · free to read

A ruler goes to the edge of her land

The story opens in the marble palace of Glinda, the good Sorceress of Oz. Ozma, Ruler of Oz, and her friend Dorothy have come for a day's visit. Dorothy wanders over to Glinda's Great Book of Records, whose pages print every event in the world as it happens.

The Book says that the Skeezers have declared war on the Flatheads. Ozma knows only that a place called Skeezer sits far up in the Gillikin Country. Glinda learns a little more. The Skeezers live on a Magic Isle in a lake, and the Flatheads live on a mountain with a hollow top. Both peoples practice magic, which Oz law forbids to everyone but Glinda and the Wizard.

Glinda says Ozma could simply ignore the news. Ozma refuses. She rules every part of Oz, and it is her duty to stop her people from quarreling, even those who have never heard of her. She will not send the Wizard to deliver threats. She will go herself, with a silver wand, and plead. Dorothy insists on coming, and Glinda gives her a ring that will sound an alarm if she is in danger.

Ozma hands her throne to the Scarecrow and tells no one of the errand. Her duty does not stop where the map goes blank.

Takeaway: A true ruler goes to find trouble calmly, rather than waiting for it to arrive.

The island rises, the Skeezers are freed, and Lady Aurex is made their Queen with Ervic as her Prime Minister. On the mountain, the Adepts take back rule of the Flatheads.
