Edmond Dantès in short
Edmond Dantès begins with a shipwreck and a burned palace, and it ends with a disputed accusation and Massetti’s departure for Italy. He moves from private vengeance to public reform. He loses Haydée to Benedetto's knife, wins Mercédès back at a sickbed, builds a web of newspapers and telegraph lines, and watches Paris throw out a king in three days.
What Edmond Dantès is about
What does a man do when his revenge is finished and nothing is left to punish? Edmond Dantès, once the Count of Monte-Cristo, sails away from his island with Haydée at his side.
Edmund Flagg, an American writer who died in 1890, wrote this sequel to the novel by Alexandre Dumas. He sets it in France before and during the revolution of February 1848, among real people like Lamartine and Guizot. You get a family drama, a love story, a conspiracy run through printing presses and telegraph wires, and three days of street fighting in Paris. You also get a puzzle: why do two young men keep an oath of silence that threatens a girl's happiness?
Dla kogo. You will enjoy this book if you like sequels that follow beloved characters, historical fiction among real politicians, stories of barricades, and a hero who tries to turn wealth into good.

A calm sea becomes a wrecking storm
The story begins at dawn on the yacht Alcyon. The Count watches the Isle of Monte-Cristo shrink behind him, where Maximilian Morrel and Valentine de Villefort stand waving. He tells Haydée that God made the young pair happy and that he was only an instrument. He adds that he regrets taking vengeance into his own hands.
On the evening of October 15 he offers Haydée her freedom before he marries her. She accepts it only so she can give herself to him by choice. Lightning flashes in a cloudless sky, and he calls it the seal of God on their betrothal.
Then the sea goes wrong. The lightning brings no thunder, the water boils, the compass spins, and the rudder tears loose. The steward Bertuccio, haunted by old crimes, decides that Heaven hunts the yacht because of him, and he leaps into the water. The Alcyon slams onto a great rock, and the Count jumps into the surf with Haydée in his arms.
A man who has taken justice into his own hands cannot leave the consequences behind.

Pytania o Edmond Dantès
What is Edmond Dantès by Edmund Flagg about?
It continues the story of the Count of Monte-Cristo as he sails away with Haydée. He becomes a radical deputy in Paris, spends his fortune on reform, guides the 1848 revolution and faces a secret that threatens his son and daughter.
Do you need to read The Count of Monte-Cristo first?
It helps, because many characters return, such as Mercédès, Beauchamp, Debray and Albert de Morcerf. Even so, the book explains the main events of the earlier story through memories and conversation, so new readers can follow it.
Is Edmond Dantès based on real history?
The characters from Dumas are invented, but the setting is real. The book follows the revolution of February 1848 in Paris, with real figures such as Lamartine, Louis Blanc, Marrast, Guizot and King Louis Philippe.
Who are Espérance and Zuleika?
They are the son and daughter of the Count and Haydée. Espérance is a brave, idealistic young republican, and Zuleika is a spirited girl in love with the Roman viscount Giovanni Massetti.
What is the main message of the book?
The book argues that wealth and power are better used to help many people than to punish a few enemies. Dantès moves from vengeance to reform, though the story also asks how far secret influence should go.
