Śmierć przychodzi po arcybiskupa in short
Death Comes for the Archbishop follows Jean Marie Latour from the moment he is chosen for New Mexico, through years of journeys, quarrels, rescues and building, to the quiet reflection of an old man. What you keep is a picture of two very different friends who complete each other, and a country that is never reduced to a backdrop. Latour is refined and a lover of beauty.
What Śmierć przychodzi po arcybiskupa is about
What happens when a bishop is sent to a land that nobody in his Church can find on a map? In 1851 Jean Marie Latour rides alone through red sand hills in New Mexico. His canteen is empty, his mare is failing, and he kneels before a juniper tree shaped like a cross to pray.
Death Comes for the Archbishop was written by Willa Cather and published in 1927. It follows Latour and his friend Father Joseph Vaillant across forty years of missionary work among Mexican villagers, pueblo Indians, Navajos and American newcomers.
Dla kogo. Readers who love landscape, quiet friendships and the feel of a place will find a home here. It suits anyone drawn to the American Southwest and to priests who cook, garden and build.

A bishop is chosen for an unknown land
The book opens in 1848 in a villa garden above Rome. Three cardinals and a missionary bishop, Father Ferrand, dine while the sun goes down. They are meant to discuss New Mexico, a territory the United States has just annexed.
Ferrand describes ruined mission churches and roads that are only trails over canyons. The new leader must be young, intelligent and a man who needs order as much as he needs life. He names a parish priest from Auvergne, Jean Marie Latour.
Latour is consecrated, but the Mexican priests in Santa Fe refuse to recognize him without papers. He sets out alone to fetch them and is lost in a maze of red hills. When he sees one juniper that forms a perfect cross, he kneels and prays. His mare then smells water, and below lies a village called Hidden Water.
A whole diocese begins with one man, one animal and one answered prayer.
