Niebezpieczeństwo! i inne opowiadania in short
Taken as a whole, the book shows Doyle as a writer of many moods. The title story is a warning dressed as a war log. The middle tales are comedies of manners and pranks, in which each person plays a part with great seriousness.
What Niebezpieczeństwo! i inne opowiadania is about
What if a country with an enormous navy could lose a war without losing a single battleship? That is the question behind the first story in this collection, which Arthur Conan Doyle wrote about eighteen months before the First World War began. A small power sends eight submarines against Britain. They aim at her bread, not her warships.
Doyle is best known as the creator of Sherlock Holmes, but here he gathers ten tales that range far beyond the detective. You get prophecy, comedy and the uncanny, each in a story short enough for one sitting.
Dla kogo. You will enjoy this book if you like short stories with clear plots, quick wit and a touch of the uncanny. Fans of adventure, mystery and Sherlock Holmes will find something here.

A tiny fleet can starve a mighty island
The first story is told by Captain John Sirius of the small kingdom of Norland. He begins with a boast. Britain spent nearly a hundred million pounds a year on her army and navy, he says, yet none of it saved her. Doyle wrote the tale as a warning to his own country.
In a royal council, an ultimatum gives forty-eight hours. The King wants to surrender. Sirius promises to bring England to her knees within six weeks, using eight submarines. He will never fight a battleship. He will sink the merchant ships that carry food, since four fifths of Britain's food comes from abroad.
On April 10 the boats sail. In one day Sirius sinks five ships. A London newspaper shouts about a naval victory, but he watches the price of wheat, which keeps climbing. He treats the hunger he causes as cold arithmetic.
A nation that cannot feed itself is open to attack, whatever its warships cost.
