Wiersze zebrane in short

This collection follows a very young poet from first rhymes to a style no one had heard before. It moves through war, revolution, mockery of priests and officials, and cheerful tramping songs. It reaches the strange, musical poems of 1872 and closes with five prose pieces that point beyond verse.

What Wiersze zebrane is about

Picture a boy of sixteen who has tramped for eight days on the roads, his boots in tatters, until he walks into the Belgian town of Charleroi. He sits down at the Green Tavern, stretches his legs under a green table, and orders buttered bread and half cold ham. That small, happy scene is one of his poems.

This book gathers the verse of Arthur Rimbaud, born in Charleville in 1854 and dead in Marseille in 1891. Almost all of it was written in a few furious years while he was still a teenager. A spiky preface by his friend Paul Verlaine opens the way. You get the whole shape of that short career, from schoolboy rhymes to strange poems of color and sea, and five prose pieces at the end.

Dla kogo. You will love this book if you enjoy poetry that surprises the ear, if you like vivid color and bold images, or if you are curious how a teenager reshaped the poem.

The 8 key ideas

A teenage poet grows up in public

The book follows Arthur Rimbaud from schoolboy to something far stranger. Poems dated 1870 sit near the front and poems dated 1872 sit near the back. As you move through them, the voice changes before your ears.

Rimbaud was born in Charleville in October 1854. Verlaine's preface says that no verses of his survive from after 1872, when he was eighteen. So the whole body of poetry belongs to a few quick years of youth. It is one burst, not a long career, and you can feel the speed of it.

Verlaine knew him in person, and his preface is part defence and part quarrel. He answers a critic who repeated a tale of a drunken Rimbaud lunging at a photographer with a sword cane. Verlaine says he was there, broke the blade over his knee, and saw only a scratch. He also admits he would have trimmed the book, yet he names favorites such as The Drunken Boat, The Lice Pickers, The Seated, Vowels and Faun's Head. His list makes a handy map for a first visit.

Read the poems in their dated order and you hear a boy become a poet.

Pytania o Wiersze zebrane

What is Arthur Rimbaud's Complete Poems about?

It gathers Rimbaud's youthful verse alongside five prose pieces, though Verlaine laments that some poems remain missing. The poems cover childhood, first love, the Franco-Prussian war, revolution, church hypocrisy, wandering, and dreamlike visions, and the volume ends with five short prose pieces.

What does the poem Vowels mean?

Vowels gives each vowel a color and a scene: A black, E white, I red, U green, O blue. It shows how sounds, colors, and images can blend in the mind, and it led later writers to theories about the senses.

What is The Drunken Boat about?

A boat tells its own story. Freed from its crew, it drifts to the open sea, sees storms, glaciers, swamps, and strange islands, then grows weary and longs for a small puddle in Europe. It is a poem of freedom and homesickness.

How old was Rimbaud when he wrote these poems?

He was between fifteen and eighteen. Verlaine's preface says no verses by him are known after 1872. He was born in Charleville in October 1854, so the whole body of verse comes from his teenage years.

Is Rimbaud's poetry easy to start with?

Yes, there are gentle ways in. Sensation, My Bohemian Life, and At the Green Tavern are short, clear, and playful. From there you can move on to the richer pictures of Vowels and The Drunken Boat.
