Pułkownik Chabert in short
Colonel Chabert is the story of a soldier who comes back from the dead to find that his place has been taken. A young lawyer named Derville believes him and tries to win him a fair settlement. Chabert's wife, now the Comtesse Ferraud, has built a new life on his fortune and cannot afford his return.
What Pułkownik Chabert is about
Picture a law office in Paris on a cold February morning. Five clerks eat bread and cheese and bet on a shabby old man in a worn box coat. Is he a colonel, a brewer, or a porter? When he gives his name, Chabert, one clerk asks if he is the colonel killed at Eylau. The same, monsieur, the old man answers, and he walks out.
Colonel Chabert is a short novel by Honoré de Balzac. It follows a cavalry officer of Napoleon who is buried among the dead, climbs out of the grave, and returns to France to find a death certificate and a wife who has married again and grown rich on his fortune. It is a story about law, money, pride, and what a name is worth.
Dla kogo. Readers who love compact stories with strong moral questions, vivid portraits of Paris after Napoleon, and sharp lawyers and society wives will enjoy this novella. It also suits those drawn to lost identity.

A joke at the lawyer's office goes sour
The story opens in the office of Maître Derville, an attorney on the Rue Vivienne. The clerks are the first face of the law that Chabert meets.
An old man climbs the stairs in a worn box coat and leaking boots. This is his fifth visit. He is polite, hungry and tired, and nobody offers him a chair. The clerks tell him the master sees clients only at one in the morning, hoping to be rid of a man who cannot pay.
Once he leaves, the clerks bet on who he is. They call him back and ask his name. He says Chabert. A clerk jeers that surely this is the colonel killed at Eylau. The same, monsieur, the old man says with plain simplicity, and he goes. One clerk adds that Colonel Chabert is dead and that his widow, now the Comtesse Ferraud, is a client of the office. Chabert is judged by his coat, and nobody looks at the man inside it.
A true story told by a poor man in a bad coat gets laughed at before it gets heard.

Who is Derville in Colonel Chabert?
Derville is a young, sharp Paris attorney who is the first lawyer to listen to Chabert's whole story. He lends him money, writes to Prussia for proofs, and tries to negotiate a settlement with the Countess.
Is Colonel Chabert based on a true story?
It is a work of fiction, set in Paris around 1818 after Napoleon's fall. Balzac dated it February to March 1832. The battle of Eylau, Murat's charge and the Restoration court are real historical settings.

It is short and moves at a lively pace. It opens with a comic scene among clerks, then follows one long night of storytelling. The plot is clear, the characters are vivid, and the sections are brief.
