Dziecię Burzy in short

Child of Storm follows a hunting trip that grows into a national catastrophe. Allan Quatermain meets the proud chief Saduko and the dwarf Zikali, who sees the future and hates the Zulu royal House. Then Mameena enters, beautiful, clever and hungry for power, and the lives of everyone near her begin to bend toward her.

What Dziecię Burzy is about

A young trader stands in a Zulu kraal as an old gun fires by itself and slices the top off a wife's ear. Nothing about the scene looks dangerous. Yet from that comic moment Allan Quatermain first hears the name of Mameena, and the name will follow him through war, murder and ruin. Why would men of every rank lose their heads over one woman?

Child of Storm is an adventure novel by H. Rider Haggard, told by Quatermain himself, an old hunter writing in England. It rests on a real struggle between two princes over their father's throne. You get a beauty who wants to rule, a proud chief who wants her, and a prophet who sees the road ahead.

Dla kogo. You will love this book if you enjoy African adventure, battle scenes, sharp-tongued heroines, prophecies that come true, and the fall of kings told by a dry-humoured narrator.

An Old Hunter Sets Down a Storm Story

Allan Quatermain writes from England, years after the events, and wants to save one story above all. It is mostly about Mameena, daughter of a headman named Umbezi, whom the Zulus also call Child of Storm.

Quatermain compares her to Helen of Troy but thinks Mameena had more fire. Both were lovely, both were unfaithful, and both cost hundreds of men their lives. Mameena, however, wanted to become the first woman of the Zulu world.

The story starts in 1854, when Quatermain meets Umbezi and Saduko before visiting Zikali and setting out to hunt. Umbezi is promised a bad old gun, and it goes off and clips the ear of one of his wives. Umbezi says Saduko must bring a hundred cattle for his eldest daughter. Her own father says her heart loves no one but herself. Desire for one woman sets everything in motion.

Pytania o Dziecię Burzy

What is Child of Storm about?

It tells how the beautiful Mameena, a Zulu headman's daughter, draws the chief Saduko, King Panda's sons and the white trader Allan Quatermain into a spiral of love, ambition and revenge that leads to a civil war.

Who is Zikali in Child of Storm?

Zikali is an ancient dwarf, healer and prophet, called the Opener of Roads. He hates the royal House of Senzangakona, sees the future, and quietly steers the characters toward the fall of the Zulu kings.

Is Child of Storm a true story?

The quarrel of the princes Cetewayo and Umbelazi and the battle of the Tugela in 1856 are real history, while Mameena and her story are Haggard's invention. He wrote it in 1912 as Quatermain's memoir.

Why is Mameena called Child of Storm?

Mameena was born on a stormy night, and her name imitates the sound of the wind wailing round the hut. Her other name means child of the storm, and it suits her stormy life and her power to stir men.

Yes for lovers of action and character. It has a buffalo hunt, a night ambush, royal courts and a clever heroine, and it is narrated with dry humour by Quatermain in a clear, vivid voice.
