Kapitan Trujący in short

Captain Poison is the story of a man who hides his gentle heart behind noise, and of the young woman who sees through it. A street fight in Madrid in 1848 throws Don Jorge de Córdoba, a bad-tempered army captain, into the care of a widow and her daughter Angustias. He answers their kindness with insults.

What Kapitan Trujący is about

Imagine a man who would rather be shot than treated kindly. In Madrid, on the afternoon of the twenty-sixth of March, 1848, soldiers and republicans trade fire in a narrow street. One odd officer falls bleeding before a modest house, and three women carry him inside.

This is Captain Poison, a short novel by Pedro Antonio de Alarcón, who died in 1891. It came out in 1881, and Alarcón says he wrote it in eight days. You meet a gruff hero called Veneno, which means venom, and a young heroine who answers every outburst with a calm smile. You get laughs first and then a lump in the throat.

Dla kogo. You will enjoy this if you love comic romance, grumpy heroes and quick-witted heroines. It also suits anyone who likes crackling dialogue and a love story won by kindness.

A street fight brings three women a stranger

On the afternoon of the twenty-sixth of March, 1848, a handful of republicans rises against the army of Queen Isabella the Second. The narrator says he will leave politics there and turn to more pleasant matters.

Three women live on the ground floor of a house in Preciados Street. They are a grave widow from Aragon, her daughter Angustias, and a timid, funny servant from Galicia named Rosa. Angustias is the heart of the book. The narrator calls her common sense in a skirt.

While bullets ring on the window bars, Angustias slips to the shutters to watch. She sees an officer of about forty, thin and strong as a bundle of nerves, leading the soldiers. Then the republicans fire, and he drops with his face covered in blood. Angustias argues her mother and the maid into carrying him inside and laying him on the widow's best bed.

One act of plain mercy sets the whole story in motion.
