Za radą adwokata in short

Seen as a whole, this book is a string of courtroom comedies about one old puzzle. A rule is written down, but a person is standing in front of it. Tony Mathusek is caught in a machine of petty graft.

What Za radą adwokata is about

What happens when a brick meets a boy in a red sweater? In the first tale, sixteen-year-old Tony Mathusek is seized by a policeman, and a whole machine of grafters starts to turn around him. Then an old lawyer in a stovepipe hat steps in.

Arthur Cheney Train, who worked in the courts himself, wrote these stories about the New York firm of Tutt & Tutt, and the book gathers seven of them. There is a camel in a tenement attic, a lady who keeps a secret, and a man with two wives. The tone is bright and mocking, and the sympathy is real.

Dla kogo. You will enjoy this if you like courtroom cleverness, old New York streets, quick talk, and kind, shrewd heroes who outwit people who deserve it.

The story in 11 parts

A brick, a red sweater, a wrong boy

The first tale, The Shyster, opens with Terry McGurk throwing a brick through Froelich's butcher shop window and slipping away. Tony Mathusek, who happens to wear a red sweater too, runs straight into the arms of Officer Delany. Tony is a good son, and he did nothing at all.

Delany does not care about the truth. He wrenches the boy's arm and tells Tony to keep quiet. The author explains that Delany is no monster. He is a small wheel in a large system of favors, free roast beef, and small envelopes.

That system has a hungry arm. Delany signals Joey Simpkins, the runner for the lawyer Raphael Hogan. In court Tony feels a kind arm around him and believes he has found a friend.

A whole machine can crush an innocent boy before anyone asks whether he threw the brick.

  • Samuel Tutt His rounder, quicker junior partner, who prefers the safe legal answer and often leaves the moral question to others.
  • Minerva Wiggin The managing clerk, who pours tea, keeps the firm honest, and argues for conscience.
  • Tony Mathusek A sixteen-year-old boy wrongly arrested for a broken window, who only wants to reach his mother.
  • Raphael Hogan A smooth, kindly looking lawyer who preys on the poor and keeps them in his debt.
  • Althea Beekman A proud Fifth Avenue lady who loves the law, visits prisoners, and faces a test of honor.

  • Danny Lowry An old Irish horse doctor who can calm any animal and cannot read a word.

How it ends (spoiler)

Each tale ends with a defeat for the unkind. Tony goes free and the grafters face a grand jury. The camel's owner is saved from the chair, though a small boy's remark makes the case stranger. Miss Beekman leaves the court free, and the judge yields. Higgleby escapes on a technicality, and Magnus flees. Payson authorizes the legacy, but Mr. Tutt discovers that Sadie has already been repaid. The feud ends in a swap of dropped charges. Danny is acquitted and thanks Mr. Tutt.
