Chłopięce lata in short

Boyhood follows one boy through the years when he begins to stop seeing himself as the center of the world. On a spring road, a beggar, a talk with Katenka and a thunderstorm teach him about fear, joy and other people's lives. In Moscow, old heroes shrink, a brother seems cleverer, and a maid awakens feelings he cannot act on.

What Chłopięce lata is about

Can four days in a carriage change a person? For a fourteen-year-old boy named Nicolinka, it can. He leaves his country home for Moscow in the spring after his mother's death. Somewhere on that road, he understands that other people live whole lives that have nothing to do with his own.

Leo Tolstoy wrote Boyhood in the 1850s as the middle part of an autobiographical trilogy. A grown man looks back at the boy he was, with warmth, humor and a sharp eye. A thunderstorm, a broken key and a bad mark carry the weight of a whole growing-up. You come away knowing what it feels like to be fourteen.

Dla kogo. This book will delight readers who love coming-of-age stories, childhood told with honest humor, and close portraits of family life. It suits anyone who enjoys a narrator who studies his own feelings.

A spring road leads the boy toward hope

The book opens with a carriage ride. Two carriages wait at the door of the country house at Petrovskoe, and the family sets out for Moscow. Nicolinka rides with his older brother Woloda and the servant Vassili.

Nicolinka is surprised to find that he is not sad. The closed door of his mother's room, the covered piano and the black mourning clothes are left behind, and with them the guilt he felt whenever he caught himself smiling. In their place come new sights, and the spring brings him a quiet hope.

Then the thunderstorm comes. Heat, dust and black clouds gather, and a dread of thunder grips the boy. A crippled beggar with red stumps for hands crawls out from under a wooden bridge and begs for a copeck, and Nicolinka is chilled with horror. When the rain passes, he jumps down, tears off sprigs of wild thyme and runs to the girls' window to make them smell it. The beggar also stays in the reader's mind, a first sign that suffering lives outside the family's carriage.

Grief loosens its grip when a person lets the living world back in.

Do I need to read Childhood before Boyhood?

No. Boyhood stands on its own, with short chapters and clear scenes, and it gives enough about the family to follow the story. Readers who know Childhood will catch a few echoes.
