Who Jerry Barker is
Jerry Barker is a London cab driver whose treatment of Beauty offers a contrast to careless handling and cruelty. Within this setting, Jerry offers a model of working life that gives care for horses a place alongside honesty.
Jerry Barker and the others in the story
Jerry's connection with Beauty rests on the care he gives a horse whose welfare depends on human decisions. Beauty cannot choose his owner or explain an injury in human words, which makes the treatment he receives especially important. Jerry's care stands against the view of a horse as only a means of getting a job done.
