Poza miastem in short
Beyond the City is a story about a small corner of London where three families meet on a tennis lawn and find their lives tied together. It begins in comedy, with a snake in a basket and a widow who questions every habit. It moves through love affairs and a daughters' plot.
What Poza miastem is about
Two elderly sisters stand behind a lace curtain and watch a cab unload boxing gloves, Indian clubs and a bulldog puppy. Then the tall woman who steps out shakes the cabman by his neckerchief and bangs his head against his own cab.
Arthur Conan Doyle, the creator of Sherlock Holmes, wrote this comic novel, Beyond the City, in the Victorian years. It is a gentle comedy of three villas and one loud argument over what women may do and be. You get a lively cast, a snake called Eliza, and a plot hatched by two loving daughters.

A Quiet Suburb Meets a Bold Newcomer
The story opens at a window. Behind it stand Miss Bertha and Miss Monica Williams, two small elderly sisters who have looked across the same garden for fifty years. Now the city has crept outward in brick, and the sisters have sold their last field. Three new villas rise opposite, and the district is renamed The Wilderness.
Number one goes to Admiral Hay Denver, with his wife and their son Harold, a young stockbroker. Number two goes to Doctor Balthazar Walker, a widower, with his daughters Clara and Ida. The sisters feel relieved. These are respectable people.
Then number three fills up. A big young man named Charles Westmacott steps from a cab with a bulldog puppy. His aunt, Mrs. Westmacott, springs out unaided and slaps away his helping hand. When the cabman is rude about his fare, she shakes him like a terrier and knocks his head against the cab three times.
Next day the sisters make a polite call. A rock snake named Eliza rises from her basket, and both visitors scream on the settee. Their hostess laughs, lights a cigarette and offers stout. She plans to start a local branch of the Emancipation Guild. A world of careful manners has met a woman who treats every custom as a question.
When old habits meet a bold newcomer, the comedy begins at the garden gate.
