Who Nippers is
Nippers works for the elderly lawyer who tells the story of Bartleby. He belongs to the office staff already established before the lawyer hires the quiet new copyist.
In the morning, Nippers is sour and restless, troubled by his desk and his digestion. By afternoon, he grows calmer, giving his working day a pattern the lawyer knows and accepts.
Nippers and the others in the story
Nippers and Turkey have opposite rhythms, so one works well while the other struggles. The lawyer tolerates their faults because their contrasting habits allow the office to keep running.
When Bartleby refuses to help check documents, the lawyer asks the other clerks for their opinions. Nippers and Turkey both think Bartleby should be thrown out, but the lawyer remains unable to dismiss him.
