Who Ginger Nut is
Ginger Nut works in the lawyer's office, where legal documents are copied by hand. His tasks are errands and fetching food, rather than the copying done by the clerks.
His place in the story belongs to the small office staff introduced around the lawyer.
Ginger Nut and the others in the story
Ginger Nut fetches food for the clerks, whose working lives share the same enclosed office. Turkey and Nippers already work there before the lawyer hires Bartleby as another copyist.
The lawyer likes the small office world and accepts the peculiarities of his staff. Bartleby's arrival unsettles that familiar arrangement, as his polite refusals interrupt its ordinary routines.
