Willa Róż in short

The story begins with a glimpse of a girl in a garden, but the middle is what holds the reader. A woman is murdered in a pretty salon. The girl who fled with the killers has every sign against her.

What Willa Róż is about

Picture a rich, fussy man who spends every August at a spa town, where he watches the gamblers more than he gambles. One evening he sees a girl in white satin rush into the garden, swing her slipper against the stones, and rush back inside. Two days later the town is shouting that a woman has been strangled and the girl has vanished.

At the Villa Rose is a detective novel by A. E. W. Mason, set in Aix-les-Bains in the high season. It gives you a crime that looks simple and is not, a French detective who reads rooms like books, and a vain, kindly Englishman who tries to keep up.

Dla kogo. You will love this book if you enjoy a clever detective, a setting of casinos and villas, clues you can weigh yourself, and an observer whose pride is gently teased.

A summer night at Aix sets the puzzle

Julius Ricardo is a rich widower of nearly fifty who lives for pleasant company. Every August he goes to Aix-les-Bains.

On his first evening he sits in the garden behind the gaming rooms. A girl in a white satin dress dashes out and throws herself onto a bench. Then she runs back in.

Inside, a young Englishman named Harry Wethermill holds the bank at baccarat. A small gloved hand drops a banknote on the cloth, and Wethermill quits the bank rather than play against her. He calls the girl Celia, and the two walk out together. Later a stout, over-jeweled woman calls her Celie, and Celia answers with a respect that puzzles Ricardo.

A mystery begins with ordinary details, so notice what looks like nothing at all.

Characters, plot and themes

Main characters

  • Hanaud A stout, playful detective of the Paris Sûreté who takes the case while on holiday and keeps his reasoning to himself.
  • Julius Ricardo A rich, vain, kindly English widower who observes the investigation and tries, with mixed success, to help the detective.
  • Celia Harland A young English girl, the companion of Madame Dauvray, who vanishes on the night of the murder.
  • Harry Wethermill A brilliant young inventor who professes love for Celia and begs Hanaud to take the case and find her.
  • Madame Dauvray A wealthy, kind and superstitious widow who loves jewels and longs to speak with the spirits of great ladies.
  • Helene Vauquier Madame Dauvray's stern Norman maid, who tells the police her version of that night.
  • Perrichet A young, eager policeman who finds the body and wants badly to prove he is clever.
  • Louis Besnard The neat, confident commissaire of police in Aix, who believes the case is already clear.

How it ends (spoiler)

Hanaud explains everything. Harry Wethermill is the murderer of Madame Dauvray and Marthe Gobin, and Helene Vauquier is the true leader of the plot, with Adele Tace and her family as accomplices. Wethermill's confidence gives way, and he is arrested. The two women face life imprisonment, and he may face the guillotine or exile. Celia is innocent and was kept alive only because the thieves wanted the hidden jewels. She goes to live with Ricardo's sister in London.
