Tajemnica Antarktydy in short

An Antarctic Mystery is a rescue story built on top of another story. A skeptical American meets a captain who believes Poe's novel is fact. Then the sea sends proof in the form of a frozen sailor, and the skeptic joins the search for the missing crew of the Jane.

What Tajemnica Antarktydy is about

What would you do if a sea captain told you that a famous novel is a true story, and then showed you a frozen sailor to prove it? That is the question Jeorling faces in An Antarctic Mystery. In 1839 this American geologist is stuck on the bleak Kerguelen Islands, waiting for a ship home. The ship belongs to a captain who refuses every passenger.

Jules Verne wrote this novel in the 1890s as a sequel to Edgar Poe's story of Arthur Gordon Pym. Poe ends on a white curtain of mist and a veiled giant. Verne treats Poe's hero as a real man who vanished at the bottom of the world. You get a sea adventure about rescue, ice, and the thin line between fiction and fact.

Dla kogo. Readers who enjoy polar voyages, restless crews, and stories that answer other stories will love this book. It suits fans of Edgar Poe, of Verne's sea adventures, and of any rescue mission with a mystery at its heart.

A stubborn captain at Christmas Harbour

In August 1839, Jeorling is at Christmas Harbour in the Kerguelen Islands. He has spent two months studying rocks in snow, fog, and the company of penguins that walk in rows like monks. His host, Atkins, swears the schooner Halbrane will arrive any day now. Jeorling hopes to take passage on her to Tristan da Cunha.

When the Halbrane arrives, her captain, Len Guy, has a red beard and sorrowful black eyes. His boatswain, Hurliguerly, is short, loud, and fond of whisky. Len Guy refuses Jeorling anyway, saying he has never carried a passenger and never will. Jeorling confronts him on the quay, and the captain stays polite but closed. His gaze keeps drifting to the southern horizon.

Then, the evening before sailing, Len Guy changes his mind without a word of explanation. Jeorling climbs aboard curious rather than grateful. Why does a man who turns everyone away make one exception?

A firm refusal can hide a secret that only curiosity will draw out.
