Szaleństwo Almayera in short

Almayer's Folly follows a man who spends his life waiting. Kaspar Almayer marries to win a fortune, loses it, and holds on to one dream, that his daughter Nina will be rich and respected in Europe. When Dain Maroola arrives, the dream and the daughter begin to pull in different directions.

What Szaleństwo Almayera is about

Kaspar Almayer leans on his veranda railing and watches a flooded river carry logs toward the sea. He is busy with gold, and in his mind he already lives in Amsterdam, rich and respected, while his daughter Nina is admired by all.

One thing is missing. A Malay trader named Dain Maroola must come back up the river, and he is a week late. Almayer's Folly is the first novel of Joseph Conrad, published in 1895. Drawing on his years as a seaman in the Malay Archipelago, he gives you a Dutch dreamer, a half-Malay daughter caught between two worlds, and a river full of plots.

Dla kogo. You will love this book if you enjoy tropical settings, scheming courts and doomed dreamers, and stories about fathers and daughters, love across the lines of race, and a river that watches everything.

Almayer dreams of gold and Europe

The story opens at sunset on the Pantai River. Almayer stands on the veranda of his new house, which is already falling apart, and ignores his wife's shrill call to eat. He dreams that he and Nina live in Europe, where no one thinks of her mixed blood because of her beauty and his money.

The dream rests on one man. Dain Maroola has promised to help Almayer find a hidden source of gold in the interior. A drifting tree catches his eye, and he envies it for having a clear way to the sea. His mind runs back twenty years, to the young clerk who first hears of Tom Lingard, the bold captain called the King of the Sea.

At last paddles splash in the dark, and Dain answers Almayer's call. But Dain will not come ashore until he has spoken with the Rajah Lakamba, and Almayer feels a small chill. Nina listens in silence and watches the river.

Almayer lives in the future because the present is too hard to bear.

How it ends (spoiler)

He wipes her footprints from the sand, burns his old office, and moves into his ruined new house, where he tries in vain to forget her. Ford finds him sunk in opium with the Chinese neighbour Jim-Eng. At last Abdulla stands over his body, and the settlement notes that the white man has at last been allowed to forget.

Pytania o Szaleństwo Almayera

What is Almayer's Folly about?

It is about Kaspar Almayer, a Dutch trader on a Borneo river, who spends his life chasing a fortune in gold. His hopes for his half-Malay daughter Nina collide with her own wishes when a Malay chief named Dain arrives.

Why is it called Almayer's Folly?

The name is a joke made by naval sailors about the large, empty house Almayer builds for the English company he expects to arrive. The name comes to stand for his foolish faith in a golden future.

Who is Dain Maroola?

Dain Maroola is a proud young Malay trader, the son of a Balinese Rajah. He comes to Sambir to buy gunpowder with Almayer's help, and he falls deeply in love with Almayer's daughter Nina.

When was Almayer's Folly written and is it a true story?

Conrad published it in 1895 as his first novel. It is fiction, but it draws on his own years as a seaman among the islands of the Malay Archipelago, and on people he met there.

What is the main message of Almayer's Folly?

The book shows how dreams of a different future can blind a person to the people and the life in front of him. It also looks at race, belonging and the gap between parents and children.
