Dni na Alasce z Johnem Muirem in short

This book is a memoir of a friendship set against a vast, changing coast. Samuel Hall Young, a missionary, meets John Muir in 1879 and follows him up a mountain, through a near disaster, and then by canoe into bays where no chart goes. The second voyage returns to find a lost glacier and gives the world the dog Stickeen.

What Dni na Alasce z Johnem Muirem is about

What would you do if the man you admire most held you in his teeth, high on a cliff, with a thousand feet of air below? Samuel Hall Young, a young missionary in southeastern Alaska, lives that moment in 1879, and the man who saves him is John Muir.

Alaska Days with John Muir is Young's own account of the summers and autumns he spent with the naturalist. You get adventure, wild weather, a loyal little dog named Stickeen, and the sound of Muir talking. Start on a July day at Fort Wrangell, when a lean stranger in a gray ulster steps off the mail steamer.

Dla kogo. You will love this book if you enjoy true adventure, glaciers and wild coasts, canoe journeys, mountain climbing, a good dog story, or a warm friendship between two very different men.

A missionary meets a naturalist who changes him

In the summer of 1879, Samuel Hall Young is stationed at Fort Wrangell. He has been there a year, fresh from college and seminary, and he says he came with a great deal to learn and even more to unlearn. His work is to help build a settled community among the Thlinget people.

That July the mail steamer brings three church leaders with their wives. Standing a little apart is a lean man of forty with reddish-brown hair and beard, a Scotch cap and a long gray tweed ulster. He is introduced as Professor Muir, the naturalist. Young shakes his hand and feels a friendship begin at once. He calls Muir his Master, the guide who will lead him into a world of beauty he would never have found alone.

The party goes up the Stickeen River, between enormous glaciers, to Glenora. The captain says the boat must wait until two the next morning for the gale to drop. The church leaders take notes at a council with Chief Shakes, and their wives pick flowers. Muir points to a ring of jagged peaks and calls it one of the finest viewpoints in the world. Young slips away from the speeches, and the two set off with two pieces of hardtack each.

A teacher in the wild can open eyes that duty alone keeps closed.
