Adriani in short

Adriani follows a singer who hides his name and a widow who hides from the world. A valet's journal, two long letters and a stern family castle frame their meeting. Music is the bridge, first through a song heard across a hill, then through a piano in a ruined house.

What Adriani is about

What do you do when you serve a master you cannot read? In Adriani, a valet named Comtois keeps a journal on the gentleman who hired him in Lyon. The man gives no title, receives no visitors and sings Italian arias at bedtime. Behind the valet's comic suspicion lies a quieter story about a young woman in white who has shut herself away to mourn.

George Sand wrote this novel in 1853. She wants to show that great love belongs to strong, mature people who live fully in the world, and not only to dreamers, loners and invalids. She tells it through letters, journals and a narrator who steps in to comment. You will meet the singer Adriani, the widow Laure and her meddling maid Toinette.

Dla kogo. This book is for readers who love letters and journals woven into a story, for music lovers, and for anyone who enjoys a tender romance in which kindness, honesty and art matter more than adventure.

The story in 10 parts

    A valet's journal follows a mysterious master

The story opens with a letter from Comtois to his wife. He has left a count's service and found a new post with a gentleman who calls himself only d'Argères. The man is handsome, polite and plainly rich, yet he gives no title and no hint of where he is going.

In his journal Comtois tests his master and gets nowhere. He tries calling him Count, then Marquis, and the gentleman only asks why. Comtois fears he serves an adventurer, then a madman, then a fortune hunter. The travelers reach Mauzères, the country house of Baron de West, and d'Argères confesses in a letter that he wants only trees, sun and idleness.

At dusk he sees a faint glow behind a vine-covered hill. It comes from a house where a young widow lives, and people say she is not in her right mind. Then a woman's voice and a piano carry on the breeze, singing the gondolier's lament from Otello, and d'Argères cannot sleep. At daybreak he climbs the hill and sees a wild garden, a dovecote without doves and rotting fruit. Strangers, like houses, often say their grief before they speak a word.

Pytania o Adriani

What is Adriani by George Sand about?

It tells of a singer who hides his name and falls in love with a young widow living in solitude in the Vivarais. Her fear of loving again, her stern family and a question of money and art test whether their love can grow.

Who is Adriani in the novel?

Adriani is a singer and composer born in Naples to an Italian mother and a father who held diplomatic posts. He travels under his family name, d'Argères, to avoid fame. He values independence, and his songs first draw Laure out of her grief.

Why is the widow's house called La Désolade?

Local people give the house that name because of the young woman who lives there, who is said to be inconsolable. Its true name is the Temple, from an old Templar estate. The name shows how neighbors see her grief.

When did George Sand write Adriani and why?

She wrote it in 1853 at Nohant and dedicated it to an actress, Madame Albert Bignon. In the dedication she says she wants to show that great love can belong to strong, mature people in the real world.

What is the main message of Adriani?

The book suggests that love is a source of strength, not weakness. It also shows that honesty, patience and care can heal a grieving person, and that independence in art can be tested by money and family pressure.
