Adam Bede in short

Adam Bede follows an English village from 1799 through its main events. A proud and gifted carpenter loves a dairymaid who cannot return his feeling, while a young squire's careless kindness draws her away. Around them move a preaching woman whose sympathy is her power, a gentle rector, and a farm family full of sharp wit.

What Adam Bede is about

Picture a workshop in the afternoon sun of June 1799. Planes hum, shavings curl, and a tall carpenter sings a hymn about duty while his gentle brother forgets to put the panels in a door. Within a few hours, a young woman will stand on a cart and bring a whole village to silence.

Adam Bede appeared in 1859 and was the first full novel by George Eliot, the pen name of Mary Ann Evans. She sets it in the village of Hayslope and asks you to take its ordinary people seriously. You meet Adam, who treats good work as prayer, Hetty Sorrel, whose beauty sets everything moving, and Arthur Donnithorne, the squire who means no harm and does it anyway.

Dla kogo. You will love this book if you enjoy village life told with warmth and humor, stories where one choice changes many lives, and a narrator who talks like a wise friend.

Adam Bede treats honest work as worship

The book opens on 18 June 1799 in Jonathan Burge's workshop in Hayslope. Adam Bede, tall and black haired, carves a mantelpiece and sings a hymn about duty. His brother Seth is so lost in thought that he announces a door finished when it has no panels.

The other workmen want to paint a joke on the door. Adam grabs Ben Cranage by the shoulder and orders him to leave it alone. The scene shows the brothers at once. Adam is strong and stubborn, and Seth is kind and dreamy.

Then Adam states his creed. God puts his spirit into skilled hands as surely as into prayer. A man who builds his wife an oven does as much good as one who chases after preachers. For Adam, careful work is a kind of honesty.

Every later choice he makes grows from this creed. He measures people the way he measures timber, and he expects the world to be as true as a plumb line. Adam believes that doing a job well is the first way to serve God.
