Zranione imię in short

A Wounded Name follows one honest officer through a chain of trouble. Loring prosecutes a cheating captain named Nevins, accepts a package of jewels as a favor, and loses them in a night attack on the Gila. A sea voyage, a wreck and a headquarters full of gossip then turn a loss of property into a loss of reputation.

What Zranione imię is about

What happens to a young officer when his good name is taken from him along with a box of jewels? A Wounded Name opens at a dusty stage stop in Arizona, where a lieutenant argues with a bowing ranch keeper about a stolen pair of binoculars. Soon a gambling officer named Nevins slips away from his own court-martial.

Charles King wrote this army novel about the years just after the Civil War. Its hero is Walter Loring, a quiet West Pointer who does his duty and says little about himself. The title comes from Shakespeare, and the book asks who guards a man's name and who can heal it once it is hurt.

Dla kogo. You will enjoy this if you like army stories of the old West, desert chases, courtroom scenes and a quiet hero who proves himself by deeds.

A ranch hides a nest of thieves

The book opens at Sancho's ranch, a mud-walled stage stop on the Gila River in Arizona. Sancho is the bowing, soft-spoken keeper. Lieutenant Blake, a long-legged infantry officer serving with cavalry, knows the place as a den of thieves. He is sure Sancho hides a government signal glass that a deserter traded for whiskey.

Blake demands it and gets a battered old lorgnette, handed over with a grand bow. He strides toward a bedroom door and stops short at the sight of two women. The girl, a dark-eyed sixteen-year-old named Pancha, watches him ride away from behind a curtain.

At Gila Bend he meets an old classmate, Walter Loring of the engineers, quiet, exact and a little sad. Soon the stage brings a colonel named Turnbull, who reads that Captain Nevins, an officer on trial, has run off. In this country, politeness is often the cover for trouble.
