Głos na pustkowiu in short
A young teacher gets off a train too soon and meets the Arizona night alone. A rough camp and a handsome stranger take her in, and she carries her faith into a school full of troublemakers, a boardinghouse with a false preacher and a bunkhouse of men who have forgotten gentleness. Her kindness changes people, from Bud and Mom Wallis to Lance Gardley himself.
What Głos na pustkowiu is about
What would you do if a train left you behind in the dark, miles from anywhere, with coyotes howling in the distance? That is how Margaret Earle begins her new life in A Voice in the Wilderness. She is a minister's daughter from New York State, hired to teach at a school in Ashland, Arizona.
Grace Livingston Hill tells the story with warm humor and a deep love for the desert sky. Margaret meets cowboys, outlaws, a doubting preacher and a lonely camp woman with courtesy, quick wit and a faith she lives out in plain ordinary acts. You get the main scenes, the people who matter and the ideas under the plot.

A missed station leaves Margaret alone in the desert
Margaret Earle gets off the train at a stop in the night, sure it is Ashland. No one helps her down. She slips on the cinders and cuts her wrist. Then the engine lurches forward, and the train runs off without her.
The stop was only a pause to fill the engine with water. Margaret finds herself on a bare plain with no building and no light. Then she hears coyotes howling. Her Latin and mathematics are no use now, so she turns to her wits. She ties her sash to her suitcase and to her wrist, and climbs the spikes of the water tank.
High on the roof she sits down, shaking, and thanks God she is safe. Then she notices the sky. The stars are larger and brighter than any she has seen. Fear and wonder arrive together. A frightened person who still looks up at the stars has already begun to be brave.
