Studium w szkarłacie in short
A Study in Scarlet follows a wounded army doctor who shares rooms with the odd and brilliant Sherlock Holmes and is drawn into the case of a dead man in an empty house and a word on a wall. It lays out Holmes's method of careful observation and backward reasoning, and it asks what justice means when old wrongs return. What you keep is a way of looking.
What Studium w szkarłacie is about
What if a stranger could look at you once and tell where you have been? That is the thrill that starts the Holmes legend. Arthur Conan Doyle wrote A Study in Scarlet in 1886, when he was a young doctor in Southsea with few patients and plenty of spare time. He based his detective partly on a medical teacher, Joseph Bell, who read a stranger's trade and history from small signs. The short novel sets up nearly everything the later tales rely on, from the odd friendship to the baffled police.
Dla kogo. For readers who love a clever puzzle, a sharp detective and stories of justice and revenge, and for fans eager to see where the friendship of Holmes and Watson begins.

A wounded doctor needs a flatmate
Dr. John Watson has been wounded in Afghanistan and sent home. He has poor health, little money and no family. He stays in a London hotel, and his savings shrink.
An old acquaintance named Stamford says he knows a man who seeks a flatmate. He warns that the man is odd. He is a brilliant chemist, but cold, and he might test poisons on his friends just to see the result.
At the hospital laboratory, Watson meets Sherlock Holmes, who is delighted with a new chemical test for blood. Within seconds Holmes tells Watson that he has been in Afghanistan. Watson is amazed, but Holmes does not explain yet. They agree to share rooms at 221B Baker Street.

Characters, plot and themes
Main characters
- Sherlock Holmes A consulting detective of Baker Street who reasons from small facts to firm conclusions, and who cares more for the problem than for the praise.
- Dr. John Watson A doctor wounded in Afghanistan who needs cheap lodgings, finds a stranger flatmate and tells the story of the case.
- Inspector Lestrade A Scotland Yard detective who wants to solve the case quickly and often takes the obvious road.
- Tobias Gregson Another Scotland Yard detective, proud of his methods and a rival to Lestrade, who asks for Holmes's help.
- Enoch J. Drebber An American from Cleveland, Ohio, found dead in an empty house in the Brixton Road, whose past is the heart of the puzzle.
- Wiggins The leader of the street boys whom Holmes uses as quick, unnoticed messengers and watchers around London.
How it ends (spoiler)
The killer is Jefferson Hope, a cab driver who has hunted Drebber and Stangerson across continents to avenge the death of the woman he loved, Lucy Ferrier, and her father. Holmes catches him, and Hope explains his motive calmly. He dies of a heart condition before he can be tried. The police take the credit in the papers, so Watson writes the account himself.

Pytania o Studium w szkarłacie
What is A Study in Scarlet about?
It tells how Dr. Watson meets Sherlock Holmes and joins him in investigating the murder of an American found dead in an empty London house, with a strange German word written on the wall.
Why is it called A Study in Scarlet?
Holmes calls the case a study in scarlet and speaks of a scarlet thread of murder running through life. The colour links the blood, the writing on the wall and the passion behind the crime.
When was A Study in Scarlet written and published?
Arthur Conan Doyle wrote it in 1886, and it appeared in Beeton's Christmas Annual in 1887. It is a work of fiction, though Holmes was partly inspired by Doyle's teacher Joseph Bell.
Is A Study in Scarlet hard to read?
No. The language is clear and the chapters are short. The second half changes setting and style, and the story is easy to follow.
Do you need to read the Sherlock Holmes books in order?
Not strictly, since most are self-contained. But this is the first one, and it shows how Holmes and Watson meet, so starting here gives the best sense of their friendship.
