Sługa szatana in short

This is the story of one man under many names. Berard tells it as a chain of escapes, each carrying Frederick further from the world he was born to. Women, gambling and money drive him, and cold nerve keeps him alive.

What Sługa szatana is about

What would you do if the charming count who once sat in your carriage turned out to be a convicted murderer? Louis Berard asks that question about a real man. In Madrid he helps an injured stranger, who gives his name as Comte Linska de Castillon. Years later Berard sits in a Paris courtroom and sees the same face in the dock, accused under the name Prado.

This memoir gives the life behind that name. Berard says the condemned man pressed a sealed packet into his hands two days before his execution, with notes about his true past. Berard shaped them into one story that follows a young Prussian from a king's court to prisons, palaces and ships around the globe.

Dla kogo. You will enjoy this if you like true crime, nineteenth century travel, and tales of disguise and escape seen through one adventurer.

A king's godson grows up unloved

Frederick von Waldberg is born in Berlin in 1849 and named for King Frederick William IV of Prussia. The king and queen stand as his godparents. His father, Count Heinrich von Waldberg, is the king's friend since boyhood and a skilled ambassador.

The boy's mother dies when he is barely a year old. She leaves her whole fortune in trust for him. The childless queen takes the curly-haired child into her private apartments and acts as his mother for three years.

Then his father marries an Italian lady who cannot forgive Frederick for being the heir to a large fortune. The general spends ten years in foreign capitals, and Frederick grows up among servants and grooms, treated with open hostility by his stepmother. At eighteen he gets a commission in the Foot Guards and a generous allowance, and he plunges into wild spending and gambling.

Great privilege without guidance can turn a talented boy toward ruin.

Pytania o Sługa szatana

What is A Servant of Satan about?

It follows a Prussian count's son who, after a scandal, lives under false names across Europe, Asia and America. He escapes prisons, wins fortunes, deceives lovers and ends up in Paris as the man called Prado.

Who was Prado in real life?

Prado was the alias of a man executed in Paris on December 4, 1888, convicted of the murder of Marie Aguetant. The book gives him the name Frederick von Waldberg, a name the author says is a disguise for the real family.

Where does the story take place?

It moves quickly through Berlin, Naples, Paris, Cairo, Baroda, New Caledonia, Java, Japan, San Francisco, Niagara Falls, London and Spain, with a short scene on the night train to Marseilles.

Is A Servant of Satan easy to follow?

Yes, in the sense that it is told in short, vivid chapters, each with its own setting and episode, so you can follow Frederick from one city to the next without losing the thread.
