A provincial town gossips about a returning husband

The novel opens in the town of O on a bright spring evening. Marya Dmitrievna Kalitin, a sentimental widow, sits at a window with her aunt Marfa Timofeevna, who tells people the plain truth and fears nobody.

Into the room walks Gedeonovsky, a State Councillor who slanders with a gentle smile. He brings news that Lavretzky has arrived, separated from his wife after discovering her infidelity in Europe. Marfa Timofeevna defends her nephew sharply, while Marya Dmitrievna enjoys the scandal.

Then a handsome young official, Vladimir Panshin, rides up on a new horse. He is clever and charming, and he has set his heart on Marya's elder daughter, Liza.

Turgenev lays out the board before his hero speaks a word. Each person in the room wants something small and clear, such as comfort, praise, rank or a good match. A town's talk presses on every life inside it.
